hi to everyone here, and i hope you can help me. my 29 yr old son has been an insulin dependent diabetic for 7 yrs now. he has had his good and bad times with it, but never as bad as he is now.
he has always been thin...6'3 around 170. now, however he is down to 145 lbs. w/in a yrs time. his doc has been running different tests for this weight loss, but so far, all are negative.
he told me yesterday that doc talked about testing him for a couple other things, which he has not been able to get time off from work to go for. he could'nt remember what the test was for, but, doc said only like 1 out of 1000 diabetics have this.
if anyone has any idea's or has had a weight loss problem, could you chime in here?...by the way he takes insulin am and pm and his sugars have been ok, and he does have a good appetite......thanks, bevann

The first thing I thought of was his BS were out of whack, but you stated lastly in your post that they were fine and he had a good appetite. I'm sorry, I searched and could not find anything. Maybe/hopefully someone else can chime in here? GOOD LUCK to you and hope you get some answers soon.

Hi Bevann,

Your son could possibly have hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is common in Type 1s, but I've also heard of some with hyper and that causes weight loss, among other things. Good luck to your son. Let us know what he finds out.

Sharon took the words right out of my mouth. I too believe it could possibly be hyperthyroidism...worth looking into.

As a diabetic, when I lost a ton of weight like that it was due to Ketoacidosis. You mentioned NOTHING that even comes close to Ketoacidosis.

I hope you find answers soon...and tell your son to get that NEEDED day off work and get to the doctor! His health is priority right now.
