Most sleeping pills are only supposed to be used for 7-10 days at most. Any more and you risk addiction. You should see a sleep specialist if you have chronic insomnia. Insomnia that is chronic is often the result of medication, or one of eighty different sleep disorders. Why did you start taking the sleep aides? What sleep aide are you taking? These may help others help you here.

i am taking diphenhydramine, and it started as sinus help. Then i took it when ever i couldn't fall asleep and now i take it so i know will fall asleep.
Do to a death in the family i was given Ativan and have been taking it for over a month. Well i switch between the 2. I am not sure how to get off because "just stop taking them" isn't working.

You can become dependent on these sleep aids which sounds llike you have without necessarily becoming "addicted". I agree that you may need to find out WHY you aren't sleeping. I know sometimes I can't sleep because I have been so busy during the day I can't unwind. I force myself to have quiet time 1-2 hours before I turn in. Nothing to cause any excitement-- reading a book or magazine, soaking in a warm bath etc.
