So ... I am 22yrs old and have horrible feet lol..Thanks to genetics. I am having my right foot done Feb 8th .. I don't remember everything that was said about my feet, but I need a screw in both ... apparently I have flat feet...and of course a bunion ... I am nervous but very excited .. I have hated my feet since I was a little girl and now they are getting fixed. I had pain in the right one ... thats why the doc recommended i get that one first .. and then once that heals, he will do the left. I just graduated college in Dec .. so I am using this time to get everything done :) ...

Hi MissE,

I have a very similar situation to yours. I am 24 and have had bunions my whole life due to genetics and dancing. I've always hated my feet and I finally went to a podiatrist last year. I had my bad foot done (right foot) in April and am now almost 100% recovered so I'm starting to think about when I want to get my second foot done.

What type of procedure are you having? I had a lapidus procedure and was one crutches for 6 weeks and then a walking cast for another 4-5 weeks. It was not fun being on crutches and having to deal with the recovery aspects of surgery but I am so glad I finally went through with it. I'm no longer embarrassed to let people see my right foot and I can finally wear flip flops and go barefoot without being self conscious.

Hi Dancergal,

I also did dance when I was younger and would always blame it on that until I went to the doc and realized that it was genetic lol..it's prob from both.

Of course I cannot remember the words the doctor used when he was describing everything to me. All I remember is that he is going to move the bone to the side and down .. to straighten it and then put a screw. Everything was going so fast and I was just so excited lol. He said I will be walking out of surgery lol .. yeah okay ... and I will have to wear a surgical shoe. A good friend of mine had the same procedure done the day before xmas eve ... and she said she was at the bar working on New Years Eve ... lol. I doubt I will be up and around being that I am sooo dramatic about everything lol.

I just want to get this all over with before I start teaching in September!

Dancergal, do you have any idea why you needed the Lapidus procedure? Was your bunion severe? Did you have pain in the ball of your foot or just the bunion area? Thanks, Chubstercat

hey chubstercat,

i actually misspoke :) i thought i had a lapidus but i just saw my records today and the procedure i had was something along the lines of a "base wedge osteotomy" and bunionectomy. my bunion was pretty severe, 18 or 19 degree angle and the second toe was lifted up and sat on top of the big toe. Most of the pain was concentrated in the bunion itself.

MissE - you should be fine in a few weeks for school, just remember to take it easy, you don't want to risk having any complications.. let your friends and family wait on you hand and foot for a few weeks :)

DancerGal, according to my pod my bunion is 13 degrees. He said he would do a modified Austin procedure. I am 47, so maybe I don't need as aggressive procedure as you had. The ball of my foot is killing me. My big toe is butted right next to the second. I'm going to see the doc tomorrow regarding surgery. Thanks~

my leff (non-surgical) foot is also about 13 degrees and i may be having the austin procedure for that one in a couple of months.

as for the ball of foot pain, it may be inflamed sesamoid bones. I'd ask your Pod about it

I see you are from New York. Where in New York are you from? My bunions are heredity from my mom. I hate them! I am just hoping I will be happy if I have surgery. The doc told me it will just get worse. I used to be very active and this is so depressing to me!

I am from the Rochester area. I see your from Rome, I think that's not too far from the Rochester area, right?

I had my first surgery done in DC, having the second one here. The first one was a huge pain in the *** because of the crutches. I'm not too worried about the Austin procedure though. I've heard that it is usually successful and the recovery time is not that bad (my doc told me two weeks in a surgical shoe). I'm glad I had my first foot done and am looking forward to having the other one done as well. Usually the healing takes a little bit longer than the Dr tells you because the swelling will persist but it's worth it, trust me! I'm also very active so I would suggest that you ask your Dr about stretches and physical therapy exercises you can do at home to keep you active.

No it's about 200 miles west of here. I have never had surgery before and am a little scared because I heard bunion surgery is painful? How was your pain? I know everyone is different, but I like to hear people's experiences. i need to get this done because I am having trouble walking. Thanks again!

Don't be scared, it's really not that bad. I didn't have very much pain at all, actually. And the pain I did have was quickly relieved by the percocet my Pod gave me :) My experience was a little different because of the type of procedure but most of the time it was mild throbbing and occasional night pain. I'm guessing since the Austin procedure is less invasive, it won't be too bad. Just ice your foot like crazy and keep it elevated as much as possible to avoid swelling.

Good luck! feel free to ask any other questions and let us know how it goes!

Dancergal,

Yeah well I have this part time job ... I started working during my student teaching and now that I have graduated my parents are forcing me to continue to work there. I get 2 weeks off after my surgery and I have to go back to working 18 hours lol standing up and walking around. I don't want to do it lol.

I will be alone most of the time. Both of my parents work so ... I will have attention in the afternoon during lunch time and then at night. Then for 1 week I will have my dad everyday during winter break. So we will see how I do.

The doc called this morning to schedule the date and time. I am super duper excited! I already saw some sandals that I want lol.
