I have been taking zetia for about 1 1/2 years and in the last year the dr had to add crestor. A new study about Zetia just came out and said it does nothing that its suspose to do. I am going to call my dr and get off the Zetia and just stay on crestor.

My old dr. tried like crazy to convince me to take it, and after hearing the reports last night about it on tv, glad I listened to my gut feeling. ;)

Does anybody know what Zetia is? I know where it works, that it's supposed to lower cholesterol and thus classed as an antilipidemic. But what exactly is it, such as a; Statin (aka HMG-Coa reductase), plant sterol/stanol, etc., what?

Zetia inhibits the absorption of cholesterol from the GI tract. It reduces the amount of cholesterol from food that finds its way into your bloodstream. Vytorin, which consists of Zetia and Zocor, has been found to cause more plaque buildup than Zocor alone. Presumably, taking Zetia alone would have a similar undesirable effect. My view, for what it is worth, is that you are probably better off if you don't take anything ...

Thanks for the reply, though I would still like to know exactly what it is, not what it does.
