View Full Version : LPR and breakthrough symtoms

I was wondering if anyone with LPR and on Prevacid once daily suffers or has ever suffered from breakthrough symptoms. I have been on Prevacid for 1 1/2 years now and have tried to be aware of what I eat and drink. I love coffee and diet soda but have been diligent in my efforts to keep them to a minimum. I think last week I overdid it and allowed myself to drink more coffee and soda than usual as well as more fried foods than usual. I guess I was feeling good and was thinking why not?
I started feeling the burning throat and bad taste in my mouth along with some mucus and coughing. Then I got to the point where I was sore and tender if I even touched my upper neck/esophagus area. It was worst upon awaking so I even moved into the guest room for 2 nights where I elevated the guest bed about 6 inches (can't do my bed as it is a king platform). I went to my ENT today who said that when breakthrough symptoms occur I can double my Prevacid dose to one in the morning and one at night as well as take OTC Tums or other antacids as needed. That was good to know. Today I am feeling a bit better from the extra dose, the elevated bed and trying to not intake anything that will aggravate it.
Just wanted to hear if others have been through similar experiences and how they got through it.

Do you get a feeling that your shirt collar is around your neck? Pressure around the neck? Even when sleeping you have to lay so you dont put pressure on that part of the neck?

I wore a turtle neck sweater to work today and I felt like I was gagging more than usual. I can't stand to have anything around my neck or near my throat.

:( Wow, right up my alley with this topic as of TODAY.
Same thing has happened to me- I've been on AcipHex for a little over a month and doing quite a bit better until the last couple of days. The culprit? Homemade macaroni and cheese!! Can you believe that? One of my most favorite things and it's killing me right now. Today was such a bad day- burning throat into my ears, tons of clearing and coughing. I have been miserable.
Last week I had a margarita and mexican food and didn't have anything near the reaction I've had from the M&C. It's insane.
I wondered if I could up my dose of AcipHex but didn't get around to calling the Dr. today. I'm supplementing with Gaviscon, but so far it's not helping much. I have resorted to just not eating anything now in order to get the acid down. Is that a bad move? Seems like anything I take in at this point would make it worse. :(:(

I hope you're feeling lots better now!

MY throat gets swollen almost everytime I eat. I can feel my heartbeat pounding against my throat. My voice gets hoarse also.

What is it that's causing this swelling? Is it our swallowing muscles or vocal cords?

I've had this problem for the last three nights. What's the deal? My medication was working great up until then. My food/acid is backing up every night no matter what I eat and into the morning. I'm so frustrated! I'm currently taking 40mg of Omeprizol. I just don't understand any of this.

I hope you all get some relief/answers soon.

It is a major trip that it happens SO fast, isn't it? I would assume what we're feeling is just basically immediate acid refluxing back up, does that sound like it makes sense? It's the only conclusion I can come to.
My voice is SHOT after 2 days of major LPR/relapse, oh and why am I burping almost constantly when all I've had is water!
It IS very frustrating.
I looked up taking more acipHex to see if it's safe to do so and everything I find says NO. So I guess I'll get more Gaviscon for now and look for an ENT that knows this condition....
There are some really good articles online about this, I guess it's just a matter of finding a Dr. who a) believes you that it's not asthma or allergies and b) has actually treated this condition.
