1.Can you spread herpes while you are having sex even tho you have no outbreak?
2.During pregnancy you can only spread herpes only if you have an outbreak at that time, right?

1. You can spread herpes during sex when you are not having an outbreak.. that's how most people get it (when their partner has no signs).
2. They say the baby would only get herpes if the mother was having an active outbreak during the birth. However, herpes is such a weird disease that no one knows for sure. A lot of doctors just do a c-section just to be safe, but a lot of herpes positive moms never pass it on to their children. Depends on the mom and the doctor I suppose!

Pregnancy - The virus is spread to the baby the same way it is spread to a partner, and thus it can be spread regardless of whether Mom is having an outbreak. It has to do with whether she is shedding during delivery. The virus is passed through the birth canal.

The chances of spreading it to a baby during vaginal delivery (if Mom isn't having an outbreak) are 1 in 1950 for a woman who contracted the virus during her pregnancy. That's just 0.05%. For a woman who has had the virus long enough to build up antibodies against it, the chances are 1 in 5500 or 0.02%.

If you inform your OB of your genital herpes status, he/she will put you on Valtrex about a month before the baby is due. This not only prevents an outbreak, allowing for a vaginal deliver, but also suppresses the virus and reduces the chances of a safe delivery even further.

Very few women with genital herpes have c-sections soley because of their herpes status. It's a way higher risk to have a c-section than it is to pass the virus on to an infant.

thank you all so much for answering my questions but i have more. If you have hsv2 and you get oral sex then the other person gets hsv1 right? What are the symptoms of it? is hsv 1 cureable? does taking valtrex or acyclovir help you reduse spreading herpes to your partner or it just hleps you with the outbreak?basically i want to know if i should continue taking it even if i don't have an outbreak or i should continue taking it to be sure that my partner doesn't get it and if the percentage of me giving it to him is the same as me being on the pill or off the pill? thank you

If you have HSV2 and your partner performs oral sex on you, he/she would be EXPOSED to HSV2 - not HSV1. There is no guarantee, of course, that they would get it or not. The type of HSV that you have is not the same as location - and if you change location you don't change type. Either strain can exist in either location. If you have genital HSV2, they MIGHT get oral HSV2 (although that's rare).

Whether or not you stay on suppressive medication while you don't have an outbreak is personal choice. The chances of him getting it with no safety precautions other than no sex during outbreaks is about 4% per year. Staying on suppressive's cuts this by about 50%. I guess it depends on what you decide together.
