View Full Version : Please help explain glocuse readings

My doctor asked me to record my blood sugar for the next few weeks in order to try and get a grasp on some odd symptoms I have been experiencing. A few being that I vomit, see spots, have been getting tingling, etc.
Anyway, I started after work yesterday with the blood glocuse monitor using a finger *****.

Reading at 5PM seemed fine at 100.
Then my husband and I had dinner, I tested an hour after at 8:45PM when I was not feeling well at all - the reading seemed low at 33.

He had told me if I had a low reading to have 2 teaspoons of sugar. I did and then retested 20 mins later - I was at 122.

Fast forward to this morning. Took my blood sugar (no food or drink) - reading 99.

Then my mother called was some very sad news about the passing of my cousin who had been very ill. I was very upset and feeling very off so I took it again. Reading was 49.

As someone who has no idea what I am doing and will not be back to the doctor for 2 weeks, can someone tell me. Are these readings fine or should I be concerned? Thank you.

I suspect that you are HYPOglycemic which is to say that your blood sugars are too low. And based on your feelings, far too low - this is dangerous.

Testing schedule immediately:
(be precise with your times!)

Waking (fasting for at least 6 hours)
1 hour following a meal
2 hours following a meal
3 hours following a meal

(Record all readings)
Get an additional monitor as well.

(Yes, normally I don't recommend so much testing, however this person could be in real trouble here.)

I don't know if you are eating regularly, but do so. Have food (real, decent food!) every 3-4 hours at max. Do NOT skip a single meal (or snack).

Get plenty of good sleep.

If you are not currently taking an "active" multi-vitamin, start one now - daily with meals as directed. If you are low on anything it may help a bit.

Drink more water than you are now. Cut caffeine, now - and yeah, I mean entirely.

What is your age?
What is your weight?
What is your activity level?

I don't wish to scare you, but if your numbers remain VERY low for too long, other things are taking place in your body that aren't good. ALL your feelings are huge signs to get help (or change behaviours). You sound to me as though you are "crashing" which take a great toll on your body.

Oh, and for the record, a hypoglycemic person in grave danger of having a seizure will take sugar ONLY as a LAST resort. Don't let your body get to that point, ever. If you are feeling poor because of LOW blood sugars, eat some fruit immediately (say an apple) and then have some real, higher complex carbs right after.

If the numbers are consistently low, or if you feel very poorly - get to a medical professional immediately. I am sorry to say, but based on what you have said, this can get MUCH worse, and with very little time to do anything about it.

Let us know, I am concerned now.

Yes, it definitely sounds like hypoglycemia, which can often be a precursor to T2 diabetes. People who are hypoglycemic have OVERactive insulin-producing cells. In response to eating carbohydrates, their bodies actually produce too much insulin. Eventually, this can wear out some of the beta cells so they don't produce as efficiently, thus leading to T2 diabetes (although not always.)

Hypoglycemia is treated with diet...a moderately high protein, low carb diet. You can do a search on the internet for hypoglycemic diets and come up with some info, but right now one of the major things to do is to absolutely NEVER eat carbs (especially high glycemic carbs like breads, potatoes, rice, pastries, cookies, etc.) without also eating a good amount of protein, and maybe a bit of fat...fat slows the absorption of carbs so you won't get a surge of insulin in response the carb load, and protein takes longer to digest so it'll be around for the insulin to have something to work on long after the carbs are used up.

thank you both so much, i am going to look into that immediately.

one other quick question - the lowest reading i had of 33 - was an hour after i had about 4 slices of pizza (bad i know!). i'm 27, about 5'5'' and weight 140lbs btw. In the last 2 years I've put on about 15lbs. I'm so hungry and tired all the time. I'm quite emotional and I vomit sometimes at night after a meal. (not on purpose, it starts when i breathe in, i get sick)

Anyway yesterday my readings were
99 when i woke up at 9.
Then 49 about a half hr to hour later, taken right after i found out about my cousin's passing (he had cancer).
77 at 5PM.
154 at 9PM an hr after eating a peanut butter and jelly on wheat.

This morning 90 at 8:30 AM
132 at 2PM, an hr after lunch (chinese food - steamed chicken & steamed sauce with brown rice).

Sorry so long, just trying to figure this out.
one other thing, not sure if this matters but i have had kidney stones and several kidney infections, and had abdominal adhesions removed a few years back.
