Hi Matt is 14 and has had some form of headache since he was young. The doctor finally diagnosed it as migraines this year and gave a migraine med. to be used. Matt usually gets the headaches on Monday or Tuesday of the week. I feel the triggers are his habits on the weekend-caffeine,late nights, sleeping in and then going to school on Monday where he doesn't eat all day. Matt is into drugs-I'm not sure if it is more than pot- and refuses to change his eating patterns etc to help himself- He will come home from school, eat junk food, processed meats, milk and maybe watch tv(such as music videos) and then go to bed- he then gets up to eat dinner and goes back to bed-until 9 10 or 11 pm and then gets up to watch tv
Is it a migraine if he can watch some tv, eat and eat or tension headache ?
I am the stepmother and his dad says he had the headaches before he started using drugs-so that's not the reason-thank you

Hi Terry,

This must be a difficult and frustrating situation for you.

Yes, Matt's habits are triggers but his habits are not the cause of his condition. New soon to be published research from a study at Ford Hospital in Detroit has identified structural causes affecting the pain centers in the brain. Matt could control his headaches better by changing his habits but would still likely suffer from migraines even if he lived a perfect life.

I doubt that a tug-of-war between you, him and his father would be of any help.

If you are getting headaches on the weekend (a.k.a. The Weekend Migraine)caused by sleeping in past the time you normally get up for work during the week.....ELIMINATE CAFFEINE FROM YOUR DIET IMIEDATLY!!! I Got the weekend migraine for 10 years until I figured out that it was the caffeine that was causing it. Now I only drink decaffeinated coffee and caffeine free soda pop and I have not had a weekend migraine headache in 4 years. Skeptic? Try it for a week and you will see!
