I am new to all of this but I will keep this brief. Its has been 4 yrs TTC, with a see what happens attitude. Just turned 36.We finally decided to start figuring out why. I had an HSG done a week ago, my OB/GYN didn't really say much-she showed me the monitor and explained that it showed 1 blocked tube and didn't say much about the other, only that it was not spilling out. From what I observed the tube was narrow(maybe2-3" long on monitor) and then it stopped at something solid & oval shaped. Do OB/GYN's read the test or does the Radiologist??? What can they tell from HSG? She referred me to a RE and there is a 2 month waiting list!!! I will go nuts sitting on all of this. Is there hope? What is the next step? Thanks so much for any help.

Hi Trish,
I am so sorry that you've had to travel down this road and I really hope that seeing the RE will help you and that you'll get the answers that you need. I'm sorry that there is such a long wait list for the RE as well.
I can't answer your questions completely, but it was my understanding that the HSG looks for blocked tubes, and that the radiologist reads the results of the test (but that the films along with the results should be transferred to your doctor, so he or she should be able to see them as well). Once at the RE's office, they took lots of blood to screen for everything -- hormone levels, and the such, and asked lots of questions. They also will do a SA if there is a partner.
There is definately hope, so please hang in there!! Your OBGYN should be able to discuss the results of the HSG with you in the meantime and hopefully answer your questions at least somewhat.
Good luck!! Everyone here has been very supportive, and I'm sure you'll learn a lot from everyone.

hi Trish!
I had my HSG done by my RE so he was able to read it for me right there. I believe in other cases the radiologist reads the HSG results and then interprets them and sends them to your doctor to discuss them with you. I had a 3 month wait to see my RE when my OB/GYN referred me. in the meantime, try to read up on infertility and the preliminary testing and all so when you go to that first appt you are prepared to ask questions and provide both you and DH medical history. also, use this time to check on your insurance if you have it so you know what costs are covered and what is not so there won't be any unwelcome surprises.
The HSG looks for blocked tubes. if they are found, i think the RE can unblock them with minor surgery (laparoscopy). it is possible to get pregnant with just one functioning tube also. so there are some possibilities out there and there is plenty of reason to be hopeful. Hang in there.

Hi, I had an HSG too, and it was the most painful thing for me because both of my tubes are severely blocked. After the HSG, my OB/GYN referred me to a specialist. The specialist did an ultrasound to see the extent of the blockage. My diagnosis is hydrosalpings, which means that my tubes are blocked and filled with fluid. I, personally, am not a candidate for the surgery to repair them due to the extent of the blockage/diseased tubes. HOWEVER, I have heard of people having them repaired so don't lose hope! Once the doctor looks with the ultrasound, you should have more information-- don't rely on what the radiologist says because they can just confirm blockage, not necessarily the extent. I'm still very new to this...- I just shared my experience with you. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Trish I havent had a HSG done so can't answer any of thosr questions but I do understand your frustration at the waiting period to see an RE, I also had to wait about 8 weeks for my 1st appt. I hope when you do finally get there they will be able to provide you with all the answers you need to get you closer the that ever elusive BFP. All the best.
