View Full Version : How should your blood sugar appropriately fluctuate throughout the day?

Is one were not diabetic, what levels would be idealistic...

...upon awakening (fasting)?
...immediately after a meal?
...1 hour after a meal?
...2 hours after a meal?
...prior to bed?

I am already on a "diet" that encourages small frequent meals throughout the day, eating lean proteins, low-fat dairy and appropriate carbohydrates, such as vegetables, legumes, fruit (low on the glycemic index), low fat dairy, etc.). I have been eating this way (faithfully for 12 weeks). I always avoid white-bleached flour products, pasta, potatos, and the like. Still, I think my sugar levels may be to low. I had a sudden and unexpected drop in my blood sugar yesterday, which led to me testing throughout the day today. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a glucometer (and used a clean lancet).

Upon awakening: 76
1 hour after first meal/snack: 103
Prior to second meal: 74
1 hour after second meal: 98
Prior to third meal: 77
1 hour after third meal: 111
Prior to fourth meal: 75
1 hour after fourth meal: 94
Prior to fifth meal: 72
1 hour after fifth meal: 80
Prior to sixth meal: 75
1 hour after sixth meal: 86

I know that I went testing "crazy," but I did this to gain an understanding of how my BS is regulating. Do you think this is okay, or do you think it's dropping too low?

All of this is fine. I don't know how high a non-diabetic will go immediately after a meal, but "normal" guidelines suggest that being below 140 at the 2 hour mark after the meal is fine.
