I want to get a fresh opinion on our son's development from someone other than our Developmental Pediatrician. Should we see a neurologist?

Who was the most helpful and knowledgeable type of doctor in your case?

We are in the northwestern PA portion of the country in case anyone can make a direct referral.

We've been to the child development unit at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and they don't think it's an ASD but they can't tell us what IT is. I would like to get a second opinion and figure out what is going on.

Suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

John

Hi there...I understand your situation...
Do you have a University Hospital in your area? Many times they are better qualified to diagnosis developmental delays, autism, spectrum disorders etc..

My son was seen by a pediatric neurologist who confirmed the suspected diagnosis. We also got a 2nd opinion.
Try to find a neurologist that specializes in developmental disorders.
Let me know how things go...
It can be a long road...but don't get discouraged.MB

My grandson had delays in nearly every milestone except speech and using a spoon.

there was NOTHING wrong with him at birth and he was progressing fine til he got RSV at 2 months of age and was in hospital 3 weeks. After he came out he had lost EVERTHING...At 3 months he was like a newborn and the delays started to be obvious at 5 months.

My daughter went to these people searching for an answer to his quirky behavior and delays:

Pediatric Specialist who studies RSVs affect on the developing brain, along with the affect of steroids on the infant brain.

Neurologist---who did an MRI and found nothing wrong.

Orthopedist because he didn't walk til 2. found nothing wrong...

REgular pedia and he wasn't much help, frankly. He gave the vaccinations, basically and issued antibiotics.

Physical Therapist, OT & language therapist (private)

ENT who took out his adenoids and put in tubes so he could hear at 15 months--

ECI (Early Childhood Intervention--play therapy and PT) til age 2.

Otolarynologist who specializes in disorders of the neuro sensory system.

We were not told for sure what was wrong until he went thru some testing on the neuro-sensory system. He is SID (mild) and has dysgraphia which can have a dyslexia component. he is getting therapy for the dysgraphia (writing).

So yes, go to as many docs as you can, if you still cannot figure it out. My gs is in pre K and doing well and he gets help with his handwriting from a shadow teacher. We are very relieved but it took 5 years to get a proper diagnosis!!!

I'm curious why you are thinking of taking him to a Neurologist? Is he having neurological problems? Seizures, headaches, etc?
