I don't like the idea of self-diagnosis but I'm pretty sure I have PCOS. I haven't had my period for 5 months, I allways have cramps, my hair is thining out (I actually have small bald spots on the sides of my head!) EXCESSIVE weight in my abdominal area, dark patches of skin on the side of my face...
Sounds like it to me. BUT my doctor is acting very strange about it. I went in because of my lack of a period but she didn't even examine me! She sent me in for blood tests and they were normal so she gave me Provera, which is killing me I swear! I have to pee all the time...I'm drowsy and dizzy and it gives me a horrible headache. I called her and asked if this was normal, but she just told me to take an ibeprophen and it will go away. Well, it hasn't =(. I am going to go to a woman's health clinic on Feb 6th to see if they take me seriousely.
Anyway, I had two very large (grapefruit sized) cysts on my ovaries removed via surgery this past May and my grandmother passed from ovarian cancer. I don't like to mess around with this stuff! My doctor doesn't seem to be too concerned....should I be?

It sounds to me like you do have PCOS. It is not abnormal for a doctor not to do an exam. There is no definitive test to diagnose PCOS. Therefore, it is your history that means the most to the doctor. Provera is totally normal to bring on a period. Some people have a harder time taking it - as it seems you do, but its just a temporary thing. Hang in there! Blood tests can tell a lot about what is going on with you and is a normal step to rule out other things. Sometimes, if your blood comes back normal, PCOS is the only thing left that makes sense, so it is then diagnosed.
In terms of the cysts, you should know that not all people with PCOS have ovarian cysts. Our ovaries have a tendency to grow too many follicles, which can look like cysts sometimes on an ultrasound, so we always have some level of cysts. Some women do get periodic large cysts though. Some are functional, and disappear on their own, and some are not and have to be removed.
I think that you should have the ability to speak to your doctor comfortably about your feelings and about PCOS. But, in my opinion, I don't think your doctor did anything wrong, from the way you describe it. If you guys are not communicating well or she makes you unhappy or uncomfortable, thats a different story. You should feel comfortable with your doctor no matter what.
I hope that things work out for you and that this helped you some. Good luck to you!
