Let me preface this by saying I have a doctor's appointment next week, but I'm curious to hear from you all.

I was diagnosed with Type II just about five years ago. Prior to becoming pregnant with my third child, I had lost about five pounds and was able to maintain good control with diet and exercise. Very early in my pregnancy I started insulin and used it till the end.

In September, I started following Weight Watchers flex point plan. I've lost almost 20 pounds and have been sitting at my goal weight of 135 for several weeks. Upon starting my new eating habits, I requested an increase in my test strip prescription in order to monitor the effects of what was going in my mouth, but the nurse told me my insurance only covers once a day unless you are on insulin. I should have made an appointment, but I didn't.

After losing the first five pounds, I was once again able to stop taking metformin. My fasting blood sugars have been within the target range until a few weeks ago. Now they are creeping up again. I've started taking two at night with my snack before bedtime, and even then, the numbers are still a bit high. Last night I had my bag of snack size popcorn, probably a cup of regular vanilla icecream, and a handful of Cheezets (sp), and it was 116! That is waaaay more points and NOT the usual night time snacks, but go figure, it was the first time my blood sugar was normal in a couple of weeks.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? Is it just because I'm three years older than the last time I lost some weight? I've never been this small in my life and was really looking forward to being able to dump one monthly copay!

Jenris,

You have listed a fairly complicated thread.

Carb counting vs. Weight Watcher as the title?
If you can be more clear here, there will be more people responding I assure you.

Thanks,
~ Mark

First off, you need to keep in mind that diabetes can be a progressive disease and when you add in gestational diabetes on top of that, the odds of requiring more medication are likely.

It's good that you have lost some weight and weight watchers is a reasonable way to do it, simply because it helps with portion control.

The 116 fasting is still too high, but if it was lower than your sugar normally is in the morning (should be 100 or less) then that is good. It is possible that you short-circuited your dawn phenomenon by the larger than normal snack. Although I wouldn't recommend doing that all the time. It is also possible that your increase in the meds had finally kicked in a bit as well.

Hope this helps a bit. Make sure you give your doc all the details.

Cora
