I'm confused by the "tax rebate" that has been in the news. I'm disabled and receive both Social Security Disability and Workers Compensation Total Disability benefits. All of my income is tax free. Will I be included in this plan to stimulate the economy and receive a check? Or do I not qualify?
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?
Hope you're having a good day!;)

Hi Mommy: It seems from your name that you have 2 babies. Well each child gets $300.00 as well.
Do you have 2 children?
Jeane
Oh PS you won't see that money until June, that's what I heard.

I heard on a talk show this evening anyone on SSD should receive $300.00
and working individuals will receive between $600 and $800.
I honestly don't think anything is completely set for definate. This will probably be another waiting game.

From experience I believe it when I see it. Atleast my disabled Vietnam vet brother will get something.
If they give it to people who have money and not the poor or disabled, that is discrimination. Nothing ever changes with the government.

Makes one wonder if a rebate may be retroactive for the many of us who are disabled but caught in the backlog of people waiting for hearings. I think if you are deemed disabled prior to the rebate date, we should be entitled to a rebate also. I mean whose fault is it that we have not had hearings. I know I am dreaming but it doesn't hurt to dream.

Rebates are approved and will be in May according to the news I heard yesterday. You can find a complete breakdown of who gets what on the US Treasury website. I think they must be using last years' tax records from the IRS to figure out who made what and who is eligible for what so whatever your tax situation was then will determine what you get?

I found out some information today because I called IRS to ask about a friend of mine who is on SSD. She only got 7,000.00 in disability benefits last year and she does not have to file a return because she owes no money, however, if she wants to get in on the tax rebate stimulus she will have to file taxes by using a 1040 or 1040 A form :)

Can you tell me where on the US Treasury site that you found this? I looked all over and can't seem to find it. Thanks for any help!;)

I just went into one of the search engines and put in "2008 tax stimulus program" and a ton of info came up. One important thing is that even if you are not required to file a tax return because you earn too little, you must file a tax return to get the rebate. They are using 2007 returns. If you don't file one they won't find you and give you a rebate. It is hard to figure out exactly how much you will get back. There are all circumstances that can change the amount.

Hello all,
President Bush signed a stipulation that SSD payments, although non-taxable can be included in this particular instance.
Take care.

I just want to mention that not all SSDI benefits are tax-free. 85% of dh's benefits are taxed.
As previously mentioned, I also heard on the news that in order to receive a benefit, you'd have to file a 1040. That goes for retirees, too. It shouldn't be hard to do and you definitely don't need to fork out $150 in order to get the $300.

I found some very imporant information about this on the irs's website... Here's a link to an article that you might all want to read. It's in regards to the rebate if you only have social security income.
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179094,00.html
Specifically should read -
Qualifying income includes Social Security benefits, certain Railroad Retirement benefits, certain veterans’ benefits and earned income, such as income from wages, salaries, tips and self-employment. While these people may not be normally required to file a tax return because they do not meet the filing requirement, the IRS emphasizes they must file a 2007 return in order to receive a payment.
Recipients of Social Security, certain Railroad Retirement and certain veterans’ benefits should report their 2007 benefits on Line 14a of Form 1040A or Line 20a of Form 1040. Taxpayers who already have filed but failed to report these benefits can file an amended return by using Form 1040X. The IRS is working with the Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that recipients are aware of this issue.
