Hi,

I was wondering which one is stronger....percocet or opana ER. I have been on percocet for awhile now and my body is getting used to it and I feel it's not working as well anymore. At one time my doctor suggested Opana, but I decided to wait for a little while to switch meds.
I see my doc on Wednesday---what do you all think?

Thanks!

Opana ER is an extended release form of oxyMORPHONE for continual pain management and not for as need pain.

Opana comes in two forms, an immediate release formulation like Percocet, and an extended release formula.

I wonder, though, if Opana is the best next choice. The medication is oxymorphone, which is quite strong when given IV, but when taken orally not much really gets into your central nervous system. The one good thing about Opana is that you would no longer be taking so much tylenol, which comes to about 325mg in each Percocet tablet. Since the doc is willing to Rx Opana, how about just going to "single entity" oxycodone. This is the narcotic med in your Percocet. If he prescribed immediate release oxycodone it could be in a higher dose than is in Percocet. Since you already know that oxycodone has worked for you, maybe all that's needed is a higher dose. That's what I'd go for if I were you.

Here are a few examples of "single entity" oxycodone prescriptions:
-OxyIR comes as a 5mg tablet of oxycodone.
-Roxicodone comes as a 15mg tab and as a 30mg tab of oxycodone.
-OxyFast & OxyDose come as a concentrated oral solution (20mg/ml)

I use OxyDose. It's very easy to dose as its a liquid with a dropper and your doc can Rx whatever he/she likes. You could be given anything from 2.5 to 20mg of oxycodone from a single dropper full.

Hope this helps...:)

Thank you for your replies.
Steve--thanks for the info. I think I will mention to him a higher dosage of percocet. I was just needing meds for at night b/c that when my pain is at it's worst, however it's getting to where I am needing longer acting medicine. I'll see what he has to say.

Thanks again!

Hi Schao - I switched from oxycodone 30 mg. tablets (2 tablets 3 times per day) to Opana ER. I got practically zero pain relief from the Opana. I gave it a month's try to make sure I wasn't giving up too quickly - but I was in constant pain. So, instead of switching back to the oxycodone (I felt like my tolerance was growing too quickly to that med) I asked the doc to put me on Methadone which is a drug that I was on for several years before. I am now on 30 mg. of methadone, 3 times per day and I'm very happy with it. You may have better luck than me. K'Mac
