come and go? I had no idea what could be going on until I talked with a friend today who had her gallbladder removed several years ago. I read some threads on this board and it sounds like if effects everyone differently. I have been burping a lot, have had a lot of indigestion, have had a lot of pain off and on, mostly in the upper part of my abdomen, up into my chest and around by my right shoulder. I also have had a lot of nausea that comes and goes throughout the day but seems more prevelent at night, but no vomiting, though I often feel like I could. Right now I am burping a lot but otherwise feel fine. I am not the type to go to the doctor unless I think I am really sick and I haven't reached that point, but my friend says my symptoms sound like classic gallbladder symptoms. For those of you who have been through this, do they?

TIA!

Most gallbladder attacks do come and go. Mine were weekly, I had a friend that had attacks less frequently. I felt 100% fine when I was not having an attack.

Most individuals that I know of with constant pain had much worse conditions that were indicitive of infection which you don't want to get to that point and all the more reason to go to the doctor now.

Burping, indigestion and pain in the chest don't sound like gallbladder. Gallbladder is typically a lower pain in the rib cage just below the chest. The pain can then radiate to the shoulder and back.

Go to the doctor. Pain in the chest no matter what is on the list of warning signs you should never ignore.

Best of luck

Lori

It can. My doc was a little puzzled in my case cause I had nausea without eating. I just felt sick all day, no pain at all just not hungry, nauseous and depressed. When my GB was taken out, it was diseased. Within the past couple of years, I probably had GB problems, but I never knew. I had chest pain, indigestion, heartburn and especially diarrhea after eating. So to answer your question, I strongly believe if you GB gets really bad, it can make you real sick.

I don't know if the symptoms I'm having are gb related or not, but I have definitely had indigestion, pain underneath the breastbone, belching, etc. One of the sites I read, medline plus, said that these were possilbe symptoms of gb disease. I have had little to no nausea and no diarrhea though. I havent' seen diarrhea listed as a symptom of gb disease in any of the sites I've looked at, but I hear that everyone presents differently though. I just had a HIDA scan that showed delayed gb emptying, but my doc doesn't believe my symptoms are gb related, so he said it's of little significance. Who knows? I exchanged posts with someone on these boards who said that her doctor believed she had gastritis and gave her PPIs-- she finally got a new doc who thought it might be her gb and her HIDA scan was very low and she had her gb removed-- and is now fine. So I guess the bottom line is to leave no stone unturned and at least have whatever gb tests you can....good luck!

BioAdoptMom3, yes gallbladder symptoms can come and go, I even had some that disappeared after awhile. For the most part though the symptoms get worse over time, unless you pass the stones or get them dissolved. The symptoms you describe are indeed the classic ones.

You also read on this board about those that have attacks of extreme pain, these are most likely caused when they are passing stones out of the gallbladder through the billiary ducts. It can be very painful and very dangerous if the stone becomes lodged in the duct.

BioAdoptMom3,

The burping, chest and shoulder pain sound like acid reflux.

Thanks so much to all of your for your comments and advice. I know it is definately something digestive its just that GB problems are something that never even entered my mind till I talked with my friend. I am in my 40s, and have been overweight so I joined a gym and lost about 30 pounds this past year so I do have some risk factors. I also know it could be acid reflux and I just started on 10 mg. of generic prozac for mild anxiety, which I know can cause some digestive side effects, though it is a very low dose so I am not sure if that is the cause or not. Bottom line, I guess I need to break down and call my doctor this week.

Thanks again!

Nancy

You can get severe side effects, even from minimal doses of antidepressants.

If your symptoms started when you started taking Prozac, I would guess
that was the most likely culprit.

Hi Nancy, I had my gallbladder removed 11 months ago. My symptoms were basically on my left side: pain on my lower and upper left side, eating bothered my stomach and 1 hour or 2 later, pain in my lower abdomen. I had digestive proglems so bad that my stomach felt swollen. After the removal of my gallbladder, I was able to eat, but still had a bad pain on my left side and lower abdomen, and also got reoccurrent urinary tract infectsions. Tests showed that I had a gas pocket next to a kidney stone on the left side, so just before getting a procedure done to blast it out, I drank several glasses of warm water with a half of fresh lemon and ended up passing the stone on its own. I don't know if the lemon drink will help gallbladder problems, but you might want to try it. If you think your gallbladder is not funtioning the way it suppose to, I highly recommend that you see a doctor immediately because it could reach a dangerous low %. Hope you feel healthy again.

My surgeon was the one who mentioned that a lot of times IBS (diarrhea) can be misdiagnosed as gallbladder problems. I also had a cousin who had gallbladder problems and had pain and diarrhea after eating. If i can remember, you were the one who had the doc who didnt think it was your GB right? So has he referred you to a surgeon?

Hi Gar,

Yes, it's me who has the doc who doesn't believe that my problems are gb related. He thinks I have a non-bowel form of IBS called non-ulcer dyspepsia. So did your surgeon say that a lot of people are told that they have IBS when in fact it's actually gallbladder problems? That's interesting. Docs seem to LOVE to write these things off as IBS-- it prevents them from having to do any further testing or figuring things out!

My doc has not referred me to a surgeon. I'm guessing that if I was to be referred to one, I'd have to ask (or rather, beg) for it myself. I still have yet to actually discuss the results with him, as he hasn't returned my call yet, but I can imagine that if I express to him my concerns about the gallbladder, he won't exactly be validating about it, I can tell you that!

I just made an appointment with a new primary care doctor-- one that my friends love. I'm hoping hat she will listen, be supportive, and maybe refer me to another GI doc. I don't want to give up on this one yet, but I don't know for how much longer I can work with him-- he kinda has an attitude and unfortunately it intimidates me....we shall see!

Well, I would think if your GB had a low ejection fraction he would look at surgery. I know what you went as I went thru somewhat the same thing.

I hope your new doctor will hopefully find the issue and correct it with surgery. Good luck and if you have questions let me know!
