Hello Ruth,
im afraid i do not knoe the answer to your question, however i have been on prenisolone now for 9months. I think it is best to take a stomach protector with the steroid such as eg omprazole /ranitidine etc.. this should help prevent an ulcer occuring.
Best wishes

Hello Auntruth, please don't be over concerned about taking oral preds. I have taken many many courses of steroids over a period of 15 years, and also had very high doses given Intravenously, (not to mention such drugs as cyclosporin, interferon and cyclophosfomide) and I have sufferred no ill affects. In my own experience it is better to take courses of steroids, rather than continuously without a break, because cataracts can form in some people due to prolonged ingestion, witthout recovery periods inbetween.
If used as directed, steroids are a great antinflammatory, and whether used topically or systemically as long as the prescription is monitored by your health care provider you will not come to any harm. I trust this allays your concerns somewhat.

Hiya AR,

I have taken oral steroids for over 30 years - daily - and also intravenously to boost at times but I honestly haven't had this type of problem, in fact I personally have never heard of it.

Take care.

I am on prednisone for the first time (started today) since I was diagnosed 2 3/4 year ago. I am having a flare, I have Lupus and Sjogrens Syndrome, they told me to be sure and eat or take it with milk. I have to take it three times a day.

Hi Goldenwings,
have you taken a stomach protector all this time you have been on the steroids and what doses are you on? After being on them for about 8 weeks i had dreadful heart burn which is why i was the put on a stomach protector. (what a cold day it is in the UK today!!!)
Hi Watoozie, hope the steroids help you real soon. I take mine with food too.
Best wishes

Hi Wen
Thanks, I hope I don't have to be on it very long. I felt so good for a little over two years and this flare just seems to just hang on. This is the first time I've had to take Prednisone, so hope it does the job!! Keep warm!

Hiya wen,

Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been unwell and am just getting back into things after a long time. I do miss everyone here.

No I didn't take a stomach protector at all because of taking steroids. I took/take them with food or has been said, milk. I try my best to take them at the same time every day, not always possible I know but I try to.

The thing is you can ask for enteric coated steroids, they prevent - as much as possible - gastric/tummy problems.

I do have lots of other things going on as well as my SLE. I have heart problems, I have had heart surgery, my kidneys are not too good, etc. and so I have to take quite a cocktail of meds, so yes I take Lanzoprazole, but that isn't because of the steroids.

As I say I have had SLE for over 30 years and I hope that I can offer you some support. The caring and eagerness to help here has been sch a good thing. I like to think I give something back.

It is bitterly cold in my part of the World too. Just had my boiler completely break down, no heating or hot water but now got a new boiler and I'm as snug as a bug in a rug now hee hee !!

Take care
