jj1313,
My understanding is that a psychiatrist gives tests and makes the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. My understanding is that once a medication is found that functions well, then any doctor (MD) can continue prescribing it. Perhaps others here have more accurate info to share.

I would talk first to your family doctor because they are the ones who know your history and overall health. My doctor referred me to the psychologist for testing and evaluation who then reported back to my doc. Since then I just get my prescriptions from my regular doctor. Good luck!

from what i've heard, you have to see a psychiatrist, but he has to evaluate you to even think about prescribing it to you. a lot of younger kids go in asking for it because of it's "high like feeling" without having ADHD.
