My 6 year old son has been diognosed adha-odd and put on adderall xr but he can't sleep. I first night he didn't sleep at all. last night he slept an hour then was wide awake the rest of the night i am afraid of what tonight will be like. the doctor ask us to keep him on it for a few days to see if it helps. it helps some but his sleeplessness is a little troubling for me. can anyone help or does anyone have any suggestions.

That doesn't seem like a really big amount and it really only last 8 hours so just give him time to get use to it. Make sure he isn't taking in a lot of sugar, especially Mountain Dew or anything like that. My son was on that when he was younger. I am 45 and take Ritalin La 20 mg at 8am and another at noon that last for 8 hours.

He will settle down. I know it doesn't seem like he will but he will get use to it. If he doesn't then have your doc try one of the other drugs in that class.

Good Luck, Jenn

If he doesn't adjust soon, talk to his doc. The regular release (not XR) form might work better for him. Or, as Jenn said, a different med might be called for.

There is an over the counter med that he can take while he is getting used to it. It is called Melatonin. I would talk to your doctor about using this.

How is your son doing?

I have one child that could not take Adderall at all but I have one that does very well on it. His only side effect is not sleeping also. It only happens to him once in a while. But I noticed last week it happened 3 nights in a row. I don't give it to him on weekends since he only needs it for school. I hope it's not more of the same this week where he has a hard time going to sleep. He's only been on it since April 07.

Let us know how your son is.
