View Full Version : Ok, I have my numbers- borderline?

She told me the B12 levels were " low, 185 a little under the cut off of 180- I mean - close to the 180 mark"

I guess 185 is technically the "low"end ... not sure if that is low enough to cause total loss of feeling in 2 toes. You all may know better. I'm continuing with the shots but you know curiosity killed the cat.

Yes, it's low. Obviously your doctor is basing medicine totally on the lab values and not reading the literature out there that most people don't function well that low.

The symptoms are mostly on an indivdual basis. I have found that with all the symptoms I have/had as the problem resolves the symptoms go away. The ones that don't go away then require further investigation to see what is going on. Many times other things are also causing symptoms and sometimes we don't realize it.

Because your numbers are so low it very well is likely the reason for your neuro symptoms. Once your levels are up hopefully this will go away.

Is the doctor doing any further testing to see why you are so low? If this continues I would seek the advice of a hematologist or someone with answers for you. Keep us posted. FLFLOWERGIRL:)

As of right now she isn't doing further checking on the b12 - Actually I haven't had a regular dr appt since the results came in. She just started me on the shots. But she is also doing a 2 hr GTT (today 98 fasting and 54 at 2 hours) and she is doing an MRI in 2 weeks to see if it is related to back pain I've had as well.

It's good that she is checking those things because of your symptoms and to r/o. I do think that you need a follow up on the B-12 being so low. Not just finding the cause for your symptoms but a reason for the low B-12 in the first place. Perhaps you are having absorption issues and need to know why. Good luck to you with your testing. Keep us posted. FLFLOWERGIRL:)

Well I think you are right. I may have 2 absorption issues. One is I have IBS so most vitamins normaly would just pass right through(except the claories and fat of course) Except that I take a cholestral med to help with that called Questran. It binds the cholestral and at the same time I think, binds the excess bile, or whatever makes me sick, because when I take it the IBS goes away for the most part. But I read somewhere that it also absorbs/binds B12!

So you do have an absorption issue, okay that explains it. I think your right about the Q. I had to take that for 10 days and got off of it because it was so binding. I had enteritis for 3 months due to iron upset. I think that stuff would bind anything and everything and subsequently B-12 as well. You may just have to be on B-12 replacement therapy as long as this continues. Be well. FLFLOWERGIRL:)
