Hi all ...hope eveyone is well and getting closer to their 'fully favorable' !! I was awarded "fully favorable" in August 07...... got my first check in Nov then FINALLY received my back pay Jan 7, 2008 (yes they made me wait til AFTER Christmas, grrrrr ) Now I am in the waiting game for my child's backpay and monthly check. (she is eligible becaue I now receive SS). I already did the phone interview and had the papers signed from her school and all that was sent in 3 weeks ago. My question is: does anyone know if that process is as slow as the rest ?? Does anyone know how long this will take ?? I am so glad this is finally my very last thing I will have to wait on for SS, it has got to be the slowest run agency in the whole world. Thanks in advance for any input ......take -care ,

if my life couldn't be any worse....... I am now in a very large and heavy boot because I broke my foot,

It's slow, but not nearly as slow as your claim. You should start receiving checks for her soon....Or you can do direct deposit. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much quicker my kids were approved and started getting money vs me.

Also, just a heads up, at the end of the year, you'll receive a statement from SS asking for a quick outline of where you spent the money (for her) and how much, if any, was saved. Not a big deal, and it isn't something to stress about, but something you'll have to do. I simply reported that nothing was saved and all was spent on food, medical, furnishings, and clothes.

Hi Queeneee: I have a court date on March 11th. I was told by my lawyer that my 2 children daughter is14 son is 7 may get money as well. Is this true. How does it work? I was told I would get 800, but that was for me only. It has been almost 3 years now. If I get SSD and back pay I could also get back pay for kids?

Hi and thanks for the replies (these boards are so helpfull). I spoke with my attorney yesterday she said it takes roughly 6 weeks for my child's check to arrive after the paper work is received (I will let you all know if that is true). Yes Bellablue your children under 18 will likewise receive backpay and monthly benefits if you are awarded disability. AFTER you are approved then you start the process of applying for your children. It is just a little paper work and then they will be approved. You receive their backpay and check separately from your own. My attorney said each child will receive roughly half of what your monthly check is. So if you receive 1000 dollars a month they likewise will each receive roughly 500 til the month of their high school graduation. I am in the process of waiting for my daughter's backpay and first check.......good luck to you and take-care,

This is so strange.... I was just a meeting last night and talked to my friend whose daughter as approved for SSD. Yes, her children were approved directly thereafter and back pay did apply....HOWEVER.... my friend told me that after the children (high school age by then) received their back pay, her daughters SSD check was deducted by the amount her children received. She got statements telling her that her monthly check was being held to pay SS back for what they paid the children. I've never heard of that happening and I've been reading these boards a long time. Can anyone lend me some insight? Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posts on these boards, I was blessed to get in touch here.

HI gagalabama....something else must have happen. You are in no way penalized if your school age children also receive a benefit check based from your SS . Something else must have not been right there. When you are approved for SS disability if your children live with you and are in school they as well will receive a separate backpay check and a SS check until they graduate. In no way is that deducted from your benefit check. Perhaps she was talking 'SSI', I have no idea how that would work . Please speak to your friend again maybe she will tell you more of what the reason is that the SS check was penalized .........take-care,

thanks so much, queenee. I thought it sounded a little strange. I'll be seeing her again (both of us belong to VFW Aux.) and I'll definitely bring it up. I've been researching this stuff so long, I feel like I could be an advocate for someone....LOL. Thanks again ! Just wanted to say good luck to all of us who are waiting.

My understanding is that if someone first receives SSI payments, then later receive a child's benefit or DAC from the parent's SSDI, then the SSI has to be repaid. It should come out in the wash, when all the shuffling of money is finished, the person should have received the correct amount as if they had been drawing the DAC/ SSDI all along. They're not going to let people double-dip.

So does the check for a qualifying child come in the child's name? Like, could my teenage son just take that check and spend it himself on video games and I would not legally have a say in it?

Yes and yes.

You have the option for direct deposit, which is very convenient. It also prevents the issue of having the check come in the monthly mail and others (in general) seeing it.

Good luck.
