I saw the N/P in my Drs. office today for a ear ache. I had blood tests done in Dec. and my glucous was 148. The drs office called and said my chol. was a little up but nothing about the glucose. The N/P saw the report and told me I am a Diabetic. I am going for the glucous tolerance test tomorrow, the N/P insists that I am diabetic. Can one test of glucose being high prove you are diabetic?
Thanks, Linda

Typically it requires more than one test to determine diabetes. However, a fasting of 148 definitely indicates a problem. Fasting should be less than 100 and 2 hours after the start of a meal should be less than 140. So either way you look at it, your blood sugar was too high. It's a good thing you've been sent for a glucose tolerance test.
Keep us posted on how things go.

Linda,
Request an A1C test from your physician.
As for your single test and a 148, we don't know if that was fasting or not? (When you ate prior to the test?)
If you do find that you are diabetic:
Ask a lot of questions
Research a good deal
And come back here - as there are some wise folks here to help.
Good luck!

Thanks both of you for the replies. Yes I fasted at least 9 hours before the test was done.
I mentioned A1C to the N/P but she said this was the better test to see how my body was using the sugar. She said if my glucose would have been around 200 than she woul have done that test.
I am just surprised that my DR. mentioned nothing about other tests, she is very over cautious with everything. My blood sugar as far as i can remember has always been above normal value, ranges from 120-138 for at least 20years.
I appreciate your Time. Lnda

I am not sure I understand your response.
Demand an A!C test from your doctors, then come back and tell us the results.

I agree with Mark. You need at least an a1c. As I said in another thread, the fasting is often the last to go, it is not the best indicator of diabetes.
If you have had out of range blood sugars for 20 years, you should also get your kidneys checked, just in case. Have a 24 hour urine test done with accompanying blood work. You can get the a1c done at the same time.
Unfortunately for many years "slightly" elevated blood sugars were ignored. But they now realize that long term elevations can cause damage. Please be thoroughly evaluated. And keep us posted.
Good luck.

I did not go for the GGT, I went back to my Dr. yesterday and they did a finger stick. I had lunch and had a soda plus 2 glasses of iced tea within four hours of the test. I would say the last glass of iced tea was an hour before. The reading was 138, he gave me a home monitor and said if my level do not stay under 120 she will medicate me. Three of my friends are monitoring and their Drs. said if they cannot stay under 150 they will have to go on meds. So which Dr. is right?
I have to check my level every third day, two hours after a meal. I used the monitor last night just to make sure I knew how to do it. My level was 124, not fasting . My husband also had a high reading at the lab, 145, he tested his glucose it was 167, he had wipped his finger across the strip. He retested in less than 5 minuets and let the strip draw the blood, the results were 109. Can your Blood sugar change that much, that fast?
This is all so confusing to me. Linda

Myself, if in the "under 150" scenario, I would definitely try and improve my blood sugars with diet and exercise BEFORE going on meds. I believe at that point that (having done kidney etc tests) it is not causing enough harm either short or long term, to warrant going on meds before the much more natural and healthy route of trying diet, exercise and lifestyle first. This would not be a wishy-washy treatment, these elements most certainly can be the CAUSE and biggest impact on fluctuating blood sugars. I would see if those changes helped my A1c in 3 or 4 months.
My experience is that some doctors are way too med happy and you need to do your own research to make sure they are giving you the healthiest and most effective options.
That's just my preference and opinion.
The drop of about 60 mg/dl in 5 minutes seems unlikely, but is not completely out of the question in certain circumstances. But it is probably the variance of the test exacerbating the difference in the scores. Different machines have different variation, but a variation in the realm of 15 mg/dl up or down, or more, would not be suprising. (It shoulod be in the documentation for the meter).
It's usually a good idea to retest if things are suprising or just don't seem right.

Thanks subbsterr,
I tested last evening two hours after dinner. small baked potatoe, steak and green beans, 109.I did a fasting this am and it was 104.
My daughter showed us how to do the test, we were wiping the blood on the strip, now we know wht we are doing,.
Would you believe I went to the pharmacy to get my scripts filled for the needles and strips. the phamacist spoke such broken english and asked me what the scripts were for. hope when I pick them up today they are right.
