in august i went down to 9.5, and i have no idea why. i don't have heavy periods, i eat healthily and i was perfectly ok.
i was given iron tablets to take for 3 months
now it's 14, which is a lot better. yet my doctors are not looking into why i went anaemic in the first place.
any ideas?

It could be just a temporary dip, sometimes that happens. But if the count doesn't stay up, and they should follow you for a few months, then they will have to look deeper. There's so many reasons for being anemic. Some have GI troubles - I have an autoimmune problem called hemolytic anemia. It could also be low B12. If it keeps happening, they should send you for tests so that they can figure out why it's happening. I would think it's a good sign that the iron got your count up.

I think you should look into the following thread. May be you need other supplements to better absorb iron:

Doylesone--Having a 9.5 Hgb is moderately anemic. Remember that anemia is a symptom of something else going on in your body not a disease in itself. It IS very good that you responded to iron supplements as well as you did. Now you are at an optimal level which is even better. You might want to consult with your docs and try to get them to do further eval if it ever declines again. I would recheck within 3 months time to be sure that you are still okay. It could be due to a combination of things and all you can do is rule them out one at a time. Have you ever had a ferritin check and B-12? FLFLOWERGIRL:)
