View Full Version : Clogged ear after facelift

I am 3 days post-op from a mini facelift and chin implant. So far everything looks good, but I notice that my right ear feels clogged up. When I mentioned in to the PS when I was being discharged he said it is either caused by swelling or dried blood in the ear and it will clear up. I have a follow-up with him next week.

Has anyone experienced this? Does it go away? I really appreciate input. This is a wonderful board.

As an aside, do you have stitches in front of the ears? How is that doing? Did you have a necklift, as part of the mini face lift? Thanks. Hope you are feeling better?

Yes, there are stiches in front of the ears and behind and one ear is fine. The other got a blister, but is healing quite well.

I had the clogged ears especially on the right after my first face lift; it does go away eventually. Another thing you may notice if your surgeon did a good job is that your throat feels as though you're wearing a turtleneck all the time. This will also get better, but I'm still conscious of mine if I focus on it after five years. Vitamin K cream will help with any residual bruising, and do try to avoid sleeping fully reclined for as long as possible (months if you don't have a husband whining about it g>). This will help the tissues reattach and heal as tightly as possible. You'll probably have numb patches on your face for a couple of months; again, this is normal and it will heal.

December, are you happy, overall with the necklift part of your surgery? Did the neck area stay smooth....after 5 years postop?

December 15,

Thank you for sharing the information. I am 19 days post-op. The right ear is not quite back to normal yet. What do you think causes the clogged feeling? You make me feel better.

Thanks for the info on the position that I sleep. I just so happen to have a hospital bed in my home that I can elevate the part where my head rests and I am going to start to try sleeping on it again. I did sleep the first 3 days in it but it really is an uncomfortable way to sleep, but I am going to go back to it starting tonight.

Yes, I do have the numb patches on parts of my face, especially in front of the ears and below the cheek bones. Did you feel tingling sensations? And, yes my throat feels different.

Thanks for telling me about the vit. K, also.

As a matter of fact, the neck lift has held up the best! I had my first face lift done here in the US by a PS who also did my breast reduction. She did a fabulous job on the breasts, but my jawline was sagging after less than three years. The FL I had done in Costa Rica has held up beautifully.

I'm not quite sure what causes the ear problem; I'm guessing that the repositioning of the facial tissue causes pressure on the inner ear. It doesn't take much to cause discomfort.

As long as the face is elevated higher than the rest of the body and you're not putting pressure on it that's fine. I used one of those foam wedges for a while.

All those weird feelings or lack of feeling are a part of the healing process. The tingling sensations are the nerves growing new pathways; don't forget that the skin had to be completely separated from the underlying muscles in order to change its position. A good surgeon will also pull the musculature up and put a couple of sutures in it to make the lift last longer; my first surgeon didn't, but the PS in Costa Rica did.
