View Full Version : How to make my BM's as regular as possible..

hey everyone,

So i recently started taking Metamucil w/psyllium fiber and eating stonyfield farm yogurt.

I used to take the metamucil three times a day (that's what it says on the container) and i eat the yogurt at breakfast and before bed. I would also take half a capful of Miralax before bed.

Now this method was working fine for awhile, but then i started having 5 BM's a day..and that is definitely something i don't want.

So i stopped taking the Miralax and am only taking the metamucil in the mornings..but now when i have a BM in the morning, i feel like i didn't completely go all the way, and then i either go a little bit again an hour or so later, or i just have a stomach ache.

Should I increase my intake of Metamucil to 2 times a day (morning and before bed) or should i take the miralax again? I'm so confused! Any advice would help!

Hi Melissa! I went back and re-read your other thread that described your problem in detail because I remembered that your experience was similar to mine. Like you, I was dx with a fully impacted colon a few years ago even through I was having bm's, albeit silly little cat-sized bm's. Like you, my GI guy explained that when the bowel is impacted, some stool may slip through but you will always have that "not emptied and not finished" feeling. The gut, when it is impacted, can't do it's job of pushing out the stool. Pouring more fiber supplements into that situation is really like pouring cement into your gut. ESPECIALLY METAMUCIL. I took it for 12 years and was told by several GI's that it's the WORST fiber supplement for folks with IBS C. Psyllium husk fibers, especially that one, will eventually cause severe C.

My advice would be to quit Metamucil completely. If Miralax works for you (it did not for me!), then I would just stick with that for a week or two until things start to move more efficiently. If you want to take a fiber supplement, Benefiber is the one most knowledgeable GI's (and my naturopathic doctor) recommend today.

Good luck!
