I HAVE JUST BEEN READING Joel Spitzer QUIT SMOKING IT SAYS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IS GOING COLD TURKEY BECAUSE HE SAYS USING NRT IS JUST PUTING YOU WITHDRAWALS BECAUSE YOU ARE STILL GETTING NOCOTINE I AM ON PATCHES MYSELF JUST A BIT CURIOUS TO SEE IF ANYONE AGREES WITH THIS HE SAYS IT TAKES 72 HOURS FOR THE NICOTINE TO COME OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM SO WE JUST PRELONG IT USING NRT

I wouldn't say it's the only way to quit. But I believe it possibly may be the best and most successful method. I personally started with the gum and used it for about 6-8 weeks. I didn't tapper off but after the 2nd week I went from the 4 mg to the 2 mg. At the end of 8 weeks I was still using 12-16 of the 2 mg per day the same as I had been using at week 3. I had been reading Joel's articles for a week or two and then decided it was time to get it over with and give up the gum cold turkey. The withdrawls really were not that much worse than I had been already experiencing while using the gum. Im not sure if it would have been easier to have stopped with or without the gum and I'm not going to start back up to find out. All I know is I never want to relive that first week or two again!! And that is my most powerful motivator to never take another puff.

The only way to quit for you is the way that works. For me that was the patch, for others cold turkey. Do whatever works, it's so worth quitting!! Good luck!!

I had that thought about withdrawls from one thing, then the other. I chose the lozenges because aren't as strong as others.
I have been smokfree for 5 days now and have not had but 1 commit lozenge in the last 24 hours. They get nasty after a while. Your not suppose to swallow anymore than you absolutely have too. It will sting your throat a little and it tastes like an ashtray smells. I'm doing okay. My cravings are passing more each day. I really wanted one this morning and I almost bought some because I was so pissed off at my husband and I though, yeah, well, I'll show him. Then I realized, I wouldn't be hurting him, I would be hurting me. You just have to buckle down if you really want to quit. I've tried so many times in the last 2 years, it's pettiful. I'm doing it this time. Good luck to you all.

Everything I have read or heard states that using a nicotine replacement method helps increase your chance of quitting. I have been smoke free for over 18 months. I used the patch and hypnosis. I also used the patch as long as I needed. My dr said it was better than inhaling all the poisons from the cigarettes. So do what works for you. Godbless

I think it all depends on what works best for the individual, we're all different.
As for me, I've quit smoking, for 6, 8, 12 months at a time ... but was NEVER fully off of nicotine. I used those NicoReplacements - gum, lozenge, patch ... they definitely kept me from smoking, but NEVER took away my addiction to nicotine.
quit-clock 4days 12hrs : cold turkey.
Holy crap I never thought the withdrawal would be like this. I can't sleep, am tired all the time, ache everywhere, feel like I have the flu, throat closes up, chest gets tight, can't concentrate on anything.... The up side? I have managed to lose 3-4 lbs just from nervous, anxious body twitches and punching the heavy-bag like it's my worst enemy.
Here's to hoping it gets much better and that cold turkey works better for me than the previous NRT. :bouncing:

noggin, hang in there I'll bet things will start to improve soon. Do you happen to use caffine? If so cut it back to half of your normal amount. Without nicotine your body take twice as long to clear out the caffine. Some of your symptoms could also be cause by a drop in blood sugar which is common during nicotine detox. You can try sipping on fruit juice thru the day and see if it helps. Your body should start adjusting to the blood sugar change within a week.
