does anybody know anyone who's had depression following cosmetic surgery? Is it common? Were they already depressed before the surgery?

I'm not sure how far along you are in your post surgical procedure. But, if you are still on pain medications, this might be making you depressed.

i haven't had my surgery yet. I wanna know what my chances of having depression are BEFORE i go ahead and get the surgery. Is it common? If it too common, i might change my mind and not have the surgery

sometimes the anesthetic can make you feel depressed, though I never thought it as depression, just really tired and wiped out. It takes awhile to get the drugs and the shock of any surgery out of your system. I didn't cry or feel depressed, just didn't feel like doing anything but lay there. I think that is normal and something the body needs to do

I think, if you are really worried about depression post surgery, you need to explore why you think you may be prone to it before you go in. Are you worried about people's reactions? are you worried about your own reactions to the change? are you worried that one area in your life you've fantasized to become drastically better after surgery, stays the same b/c you are the same person before and after? are you worried that the surgery will change you?
I don't think depression is a common concern of surgery, and I do think that sometimes if you have a feeling you will be depressed you can coax your body into it. So I think you need to do a lot of soul-searching and pin point your concerns, and talk about it until you feel comfortable with either or not going through with surgery, here or with a therapist

I'm worried about mainly because somebody in my family had it following surgery and so i saw the effect that depression had on her and i really don't want the same thing to happen to me.

I have been treated for depression after my procedures. My first lift 20 years ago was so great that I guess I thought this one would be too. I realize that I am 60 y/o and didn't expect to be pretty or younger looking, but the result is so minor that you look at what you spent and the discomfort you went through for what? I don't think the surgeon is doing you any favors by being conservative, not that I want to look like Joan Rivers, but they have to take into consideration that the natural aging process will lessen the effects of the surgery fairly soon when you are a certain age, so maybe go a little tighter and your bear with it until it settles and begins to drop a bit.
So I'm out a ton of cash and don't feel like I look much better, so yeah, I'm depressed about that.
