View Full Version : Toe fungus or infection?

A while back I stubbed my big toe and the corner of my toenail broke down further than my nail line. I finished the job and clipped it to the break. Since then the little bit of skin around it is dark and sort of painful. The dark doesn't go much under the nail. It looks like I have lint stuck in the corner where my toenail meets the skin.
Any treatments you suggest? My nail is healthy, otherwise. No black lines, thickening, or yellowing.
Thanks.

A black discoloration is the sign of a Pseudomonas bacterial infection. Keep it clean and dry and apply a drop of peroxide at least twice daily to help kill the bacteria. The stain, whichis composed mainly of iron compounds, will remain and will grow out with the nail plate.

Thanks, Marti! The nail itself isn't really stained, it's the skin around it. I will try peroxide. If that doesn't help, I will make an app't with a podiatrist. Thanks so much for the help.

Pseudomonas can attack the skin as well.

Marti, is there a topical antibacterial I can get from my doctor, or over the counter? I used some rubbing alcohol to dry the area, then applied peroxide. I've been wearing flip flops all day to keep my toe dry. I am itching to soak it in some warm water and epsom salt. I took a good look at it today and it is confined to the skin (upper left corner of toe on right foot) and a tiny bit under the nail--if at all.
Not to be a pest, but with this routine when should I expect results?
Thanks for the help.

I can't believe this. I just got my clippers out and cut my nail back to where the black ends. I rubbed alcohol on it for a few minutes, then peroxide, and the black is gone! I am going to continue this for a few days, see what happens.
On a side note, it seems like the nail was growing into my skin a little, causing soreness. When I cut it back I had instant relief.
Marti, thank you so much for your help. I wish I had posed this question months ago.:)

You should keep up this routine for no less than 2 weeks. Always be sure to scrub your toenails to keep them clean and when you cut the nails, always be sure to cut away the point at each corner if you cut them square. That will ensure that the corners do not grow into the skin and cause another infection. Also, be sure to scrape out any debris under the free edge. You should perform a pedicure at least once a month. You can find the instructions for a 'salon' pedicure on my website www.hooked-on-nails.com (link approved by Moderator 1.)

I'll keep up the routine for two weeks, as you recommend. Now I don't need an excuse to get a monthly pedicure, I love them! I will also check out your website.
Thanks again.
