Anyone had this done? Share your experience, I am going to get my left kidney removed this way in the near future and was wondering what I am in for. What to be expected in recovery and how long I should take off work. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I just had my left kidney removed via laporascopy on Dec 4. I was back at work on Dec 19. Granted, I sit 90% of the time at work, but I was able to drive after two weeks and was bored at home. I have two small scars (less than 1 inch) and one large scar about 4 inches. The first small scar is about 4 inches to the left of my belly button and the other is about 4 inches above the belly button, but in line with my left shoulder. The larger scar goes from the side of my waist down toward the middle of my lower abdomen. That was used to remove the kidney. My surgery was on a Tuesday and I left the hospital that Friday. They had me on an all liquid diet until I passed gas (indicating my bowels were working again), then I was able to eat solid food and released from the hospital. The best thing to do is to get up and walk as soon as possible.
My doctor told me I could not drive for two weeks and not lift anything heavy at all for at least two weeks. After a 3-4 weeks, I could start lifting increasingly heavier things. You just have to take it easy at first.
Pain meds were a problem for me as I had difficulty taking them on an empty stomach. At first they had me on a machine which dispensed demoral, but I was just too out of it, so they took me off the machine and gave it to me intraveneously which made me vomit, so they tried other pain medications by mouth which also made me nauseous because I have difficulty taking any strong medications without something in my stomach and frozen popsicles, fruit juices, jello and broth do not cut it. I finally ended up on plain Tylenol until I was able to get solid foods and then I was upgraded to Tramadol.
This link was very helpful to me: http://cancerguide.org/rcc_nephtips.html
Good luck with your surgery. Let us know how things go.

I had a partial kidney removal for solid tumor (turned out to be a rare benign solid tumor!) on Jan 30th, spent 2 nights in hospital, drove 2+ hours home Tues Feb 5th, am pretty much feeling well and strong, can walk and drive. Dr. says no heavy lifting 6 weeks, otherwise do what I feel like. My big problem was nausea--even tho I got antinausea drugs for the anesthesia, I got nauseated as soon as I got out of hospital to friend's house, and it took a while for RX antinausea drugs to kick in. Partial removal can be more complicated then complete removal, and a friend who had complete removal recovered quicker than I. For me, no problem with incision, just soreness now under rib, very tolerable. Worst part almost was the stuff to cleanse the bowel the day before, and the liquid diet. As operations go, laparascopic kidney removal is one of the easiest from what I hear and read. Soooooo much better than open surgery. Many people spend only 1 night in hospital. Best of luck and think positive.

Thanks for the posts I am glad it does not sound to bad. I had a surgery back in November to try and fix the upj blockage with the kidney but it did not work and has blocked again. I did not suffer from any nausea and can take any pain killer with or with out food no problem. I am so looking forward to getting this kidney removed I have been in pain for the last 10 months from the kidney or stents not to mention the nausea and fatigue. The kidney only has 18% function so its no loss to get rid of. I have been basically living with one kidney for a while know. Keep the posts coming. Thanks

Just had it done this week. Had R kidney removed due mass (will find out 5/28 if it is beneign or not).
Went in on Monday 5/19 and was released on 5/20. No issues with meds or nasaua. Have to say worse part is the pre-cleansing and the post passing gas.

Best of luck! The good thing with kidney masses are that even if malignant, removal is almost always the only treatment and prognosis excellent. I was lucky and my tumor turned out to be a solid benign tumor, but I was feeling very confident of a good outcome whatever the pathology showed. My operation was end of January and am fully back to normal except for the scar.

My 34 year old daughter has her left kidney removed 5/23. According to her Dr the kidney had fused to other organs requiring him to pry it out. Went home and within 4 days had to be rushed into emergency surgery to remove a foot of intestine and put in cololstomy bag. She went into septic shock and we almost lost her. Spent 7 days in ICU another 4 weeks in the hospital. The last week in rehab. Back at home now, but recovery is very slow. They are using a med vac for the huge incision on her tummy.

Island-- What an awful story! I'm so sorry for your daughter. I hope she is making rapid progress in her recovery by now. What is her current diagnosis? Which hospital did she use? (I live in Seattle). Also, has she hooked up with Northwest Kidney Center? They have given me lots of helpful advice and have a lot of patient education classes. Please keep us posted on her condition.

Well I was scheduled for my laparoscopic kidney removal Monday, but I just got a call today saying that my doctor had it moved up to a sooner date. Tomorrow the 13th. I have to go in for my pre-op testing at 2 today(JPS Ft. Worth). I just turned 20 May 10th and have been in and out of the ER since I was 16. I have high blood pressure. I use to have syncope and just pass out all the time (that's the main reason I was in the hospital), but at one point they thought I had a heart murmur. My poor mother has so many medical bills she has for me. Now I too have a lot, but JPS is awesome, the best place ever. They see you quickly you don't get nagged 3 days after you leave the hospital about paying your bill either.
Anyway, I just came on here to see if I can find out more about how long my recovery time will be and stuff. I'm a figure skater and I wanted to play v-ball this yr, but I guess that's out of the question. College starts August 25th (DBU) and I just want to know when I can start working and what type of job I should look for when I did. I know someone said 3-4 weeks they started working, but I need a job ASAP. Is bending going to be a problem? I can't take pain well at all, should I be worried? Oh yeah, my dr. told me that he thought it was something I was born with. Kind of sad because they wanted to repair it, but it was too late when I came back from college (went to Ohio Christian from Jan-may). My dad is like super freaked and is driving me crazy. He had me call prayer lines and I think he's worried, but I feel comfortable enough to do it.
Just let me know anything that you think may help me. I have internet on my phone and I'll be checking this while in the hospital. :D

Suzycat, She was at Virginia Mason here in Seattle. Her doctors are great, all 10+ of them. They are giving her a new smaller med vac this week, so her rehab should get easier. She has a problem with low blood pressure so sometimes she gets dizzy and that makes working out alone difficult.
Thanks to everyone for you support and prayers.

Hi, Ren--
Unfortunately, I don't have any words of wisdom on your condition, because I have a different type of kidney disease. However, just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking about you on the 13th and beaming good "juju" your way. I have two college age daughters (Loyola Marymount in L.A. and Humboldt State in northern california), so I sympathize with how this is impacting your life. My rugby-playing daughter would be quite despondent if she had to miss a season. Please keep us posted on your progress. You and your parents have my prayers.

Well I'm in the hospital right now in a lot of pain. They said my kidney came out easily, geez I feel like vomiting. Well I got to go home yesterday around 1pm, but all my time was spent sleeping until some people came to my parents house to visit me. It stinks because I can't go to the restroom by myself or shower by myself. 4 Incisions and this morning I vomited up water which just hurt me more.
My back and my neck are also hurting a lot. I can't walk very far or I feel like collapsing and I can't sit up very long or my back starts to ache. I have a couch to lay on, but my dad is trying to rent a hospital bed for me. My mother is taking this whole week off to help me out until I can move a little better.
The most pain I have experienced was when I first had to get up while in the hospital, laying down on the couch for the first time (and trying to get up), and I would have to say that the Vomiting beat all of those because it just made me want to pass out. That pain was way too intense.
I can't do without pain meds, I can't take pain well at all :( so I have to have them. They just end up knocking me out which is fine by me.
Thank you all for your help. I need to go get back in bed.

Greens, be prepared. as soon as you go into the recovery room you will probably feel better than worse. Due to you realizing the pain isn't from your kidney and that it's from your incisions. I was so happy to fee the difference until I started coughing from my sore throat. Those breathing tubes still have me coughing a bit which hurts like crazy. I released a lot of the gas that they put in my stomach. I would say the best and fastest way to do that I'd laxative. I took 2 Duculax and I was so happy, but I wish I would have taken some today. The bubbling in your stomach will hurt like crazy, plus it's difficult to sleep on you "good" side.
I would've said that I've been doing better, but I have been sick. Near vomiting sick still. I went outside to get the mail (bad idea) I nearly passed out on the way back. I started seeing multiple colors and had to make myself move faster. For some reason fruit is hurting my stomach now, but when I had it in the hospital it made me feel better. The apple sauce is good though.
I almost ended up showering by myself (dont know how that would have turned out) tonight, but I knocked over a can of shaving cream and my mother came in there asking what the heck I thought I was going to do since I can't bend over. I didn't really think that far. I just knew that I needed to take a shower. Glad I'm not still in Ohio or I'd be in some big trouble shower wise and getting dressed.
I'll say the best things for me have been: soup ...vegetable beef n chicken noodle (cambells low sodium, they didn't make my stomach burn), all natural apple sauce, and salad (haha hawaiian chicken salad from cheddars). Also drink lots and lots of WATer..I don't think I wouldve made it one more day if I hadn't been downing the stuff.
I can finally lie on my left or "good" side without it hurting too much.
Greens I know you'll be fine what's the date? July what?

Well well, yesterday I went for my check up and everything is healing up nicely and my doctor even changed my pain pills because she thinks that was what was making me nauseated. Right on! I haven't felt sick like before and I'm so happy about it because after vomiting the first time I don't think I could handle it anymore.
The only other problem I'm having now is my right knee seems to be angry about laying down all the time and it feels like it needs to be popped. When I do it get up it hurts like crazy. I nearly passed out at the hospital though. I couldn't get a wheel chair because they have a wheel chair service that runs around and answers calls for them so I walked (i was on the 2nd floor) to the elevator (took a break of course) then I tried to walk to the food court because I was nausease (wow I can't spell) and I made it there. After I had two chicken strips I felt so tired and I just wanted to fall asleep right there, but we had to get to the car. So I walked from there about 100 meters which seemed like half a mile to me and I nearly passed out. So word of advice: Never walk more than about 15 steps in any direction without a break. In the end my mother yelled at a nurse and we got a wheel chair and we left and I came home and went to sleep.
I hate not being able to go anywhere. I missed my transfer student registration for college and I have to audition to be accepted into the fine arts dept. since I'm a voical major, but I can barely spit let alone sing and I don't know how long until I'm able to either.
Oh yeah and coughing is going to be a major "PAIN". Since the put a breathing tube in you'll be coughing for a while and it's in no way exciting. It has gotten worse because I've been coughing a lot.
Well Greens can't wait to hear about your surgery. :-)

Greens that's exciting. That was the only thing I was a little nervous about because I didn't know they did that. My nurse was a heavy set lady in maybe her 40's with a great sense of humor. I wish everyone was that happy to be at work. Anyway, the worst part was the needle for giving blood. I'm normally fine with it, but she used one of those stupid little needles that leaves you burning when they take it out. Plus I had to get poked twice because that nutty nurse (different lady, I think she was half crazy) tried in my left arm even though she couldn't see the vein. I tell you. My life is full of adventures and I wish that they would have all stayed happy ones. They only problem is if they had I wouldn't have learned anything new.

Sending good thoughts to Ren and Greens and everyone on this thread. Almost 6 months since my surgery (benign solid tumor) and all is really fine, but wondering if any of you have had followup CAT scans and how long after surgery? My surgeon suggested that I have a scan 3-4 months post surgery to establish a base picture of things. But am wondering if really necessary. Any info appreciated.

Thanks Greens. My surgery was on a Wednesday and I spent two nights in the hospital after a partial laparoscopy (which the surgeon said is a bit more complicated than taking the whole thing out). Then stayed at a friend's for a few days because I live 2 hours from the hospital. Was able to drive home alone the following Tuesday. Following doctor's orders, I stopped halfway and walked around to be sure blood circulated in legs. In the hospital I was up walking a fair amount by late afternoon Thursday the day after surgery. I felt strong but pain control was not real good for me and I got nauseated off and on, and then really badly at the friend's home. Strong Rx finally stopped that. Were it not for that I coulda practically gone dancing! (well not really, but the nausea is a setback). I remember walking around the block on Saturday and Sunday after the Wed. surgery. Getting the staples out on Monday was a huge step forward as they were getting very annoying. Once I got home (I live on a farm) I tried hard to take it easy but I was really able to do anything except lift heavy stuff as long as I did it slowly and methodically. The incision and underneath the two poke holes continued sore off and on for several months, esp. if I wasn't careful and did something too heavy. (I'm 65 by the way). I was certainly more tired than usual for maybe 6 weeks, and doubt if I would have been up to going to an office for maybe a month, but since I'm on the farm I could work a bit and then lie down. No problem at all driving from day 8 on . I'm sure the fact that I didn't have any problem with kidney function made recovery faster than for someone who has had those complications. Hope that helps.

I went to the hospital yesterday for another issue I started having. Now it turns out I have a UTI and boy is it not fun. Being at the hospital for over 16 hrs wasn't great either. While I was there they gave me a CT scan and a chest x-ray. Everything was great but I don't know why, they ended up giving me a breathing treatment which just made me feel weird.
Hmm, I think I could probably drive now if I didn't get tired so quickly because while riding in the car to the hospital I deal with a lot of bumps and stuff. Yea, they hurt, but it's not as bad as moving the wrong way and pulling my superglue. Meta sorry that you had staples. I think I would have gone crazy with those. I had dissolvable stitches and superglue on the outter skin. I love touching it a little too much. ha, I just like how the cut feels underneath the glue.
Hope everyone else is doing fine!

Greens, I think I found that the worse thing about this is you think you can do everything just fine, but then when you do you're either too tired or your body aches. I'm having pain in my lower back, my right knee feels like it's going to give, and my stomach feels like it's going to rip back open.
I wish I could start dancing and exercising again. Remember I'm only 20, I do a lot. I'm also a Figure skater/x-track runner/v-ball player..so I'm use to working out a great deal, plus I was trying to lose weight. Ugh, I'm so frustrated. I was pushing my own wheel chair today in wal-mart though. I nearly died, but it felt good to do. Please remember not to over due it because it will hurt later even though it seems like you're fine at the time.

I think wanting to do more than I can will be the greatest problem for me. I like working in the yard and on the house and just keeping busy. I have slowed down over the last year because of the pain in my kidney and the endless stents being put in and taken out. Before this kidney thing started I was really into working out and had lost 40 lbs but have put 10 lbs back on in the last year. I can hardly wait to get back into my exercise regime I was on, but until then I guess I will be spending some quality time in my Lazyboy watching TV.

06-26-2008, 12:53 AM
Greens!! I didn't say don't do anything. You better not sit in a lazy boy every day. I've lost 5 lbs and I'm happy b/c I'm trying to get back to my middle school size..which isn't too bad 35 lbs to go. The key is to walk as much as you can handle and to eat light. Helps you feel better too. I've been having lots of fruit and light meals. It's beem making me feel smaller. The only thing I noticed is that it seems like my closeness to getting my abs back is far in the distance now. Stupid stomach actually looks bigger, but I hope I can fix that quickly. Greens!! July is around the corner and that Lazy boy should be in the dumpster. haha. Oh wait now that I think about it, you might not even be able to get in that chair until after your first week or so. I can barely sit regular in my recliner without hurting myself. So don't do any leaning back anytime right after. you'll find out in the hospital what your "okay zone" is. Meaning how far you can bend, lean back, walk without dying, and how well you can spit...etc.
I've been in the worse pain because of my back. I'm going crazy.

Oh ya I plan to do as much walking as possible, as a matter of fact I have a tread mill beside my Lazyboy. I like to watch TV while on the tread mill. I was just saying I have a tendency to over do it and well probably be in my lazyboy a little more than I am used to. Sounds like your feeling better how is getting around? and why do you have wheel chair? Is it hard to walk around unsupported at first? Feel better soon. From what my doctor told me I should be able to get up and walk around the day of the surgery and should be able to get around no problem at the the end of the first week and be able to drive by the end of the second week, but just can't lift anything heavy for 4 weeks.

Yup yup. Your doctors right about those times. I was able to walk the first day, but it was extremely painful. I'm one of those people who try to eliminate the pain as fast as possible. The only problem I'm really having now is walking fast. I normally walk very quickly, but it hurts to do that. I can't bend down too far without pain either. I mean I can't touch my toes, my knees are great and get lots of lotion haha. I have a wheel chair because after walking too much I feel very tired, so my mother wants me to have it until the end of this two weeks. Which is really Friday for me, but we are going to the end of the week. :( I just want to be able to drive myself places, but it's close. Monday comes and I'm gone AWAY FROM MY PARENTS!! ugh, I've seen way too much of them.
You'll do just fine sweetie, no need to worry. I found out that if I would have pushed myself harder I would have probably been able to walk longer. I'm starting to. It's getting much easier.

Hi Greens,
I'm Shay. I've stopped posting on the kidney board a while back. I'm mainly on the chronic pain board. I had my left kidney removed via scoped. That was back in April of '06.
My story is very rare. Long story short....I've had over 70+ surgeries for my kidneys, now just kidney, and my remaining kidney is starting to fail. I don't qualify for transplant and I will not "live" on dialysis.
I'm 37 yrs. old and this all started when I was 9 yrs. old. I've had over 400+ kidney stones (literally...we stopped counting several yrs. ago), primary hyperparathyroidism(most of my parathyroids have been removed, but still mass produce stones). To date, I'm the "rarest case" all the top medical schools/docs study.
Anyway, the nephrectomy wasn't bad. I've had a lot worse (major insicions all over my body). All of these surgeries have landed me in pain mangement and I'm on the most potent pain meds available (the ones usually reserved for terminally ill cancer patients). Although I don't have cancer, I'm considered terminal due to my failing kidney.
You will be fine!! ;) If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'll check in from time to time, but like I said, I post mainly on the pain management board. Good luck!!

FRIENDLY_ONE:
My husband also had his left kidney removed via laproscope. His remaining kidney was working fine, but now is no longer working well, and he has to be on the renal diet. This diet is extremely difficult (which you probably already know, if you're on it, too) - but that being said, it IS DOABLE.;)
Another thing. my husband's surgery was done about 5 yrs ago due to the fact that a grade 1 cancerous tumor was found. Thankfully, due to the fact that it was grade 1, it hadn't done any damage or spread anywhere, and no further treatment was required. My husband is now 80 yrs old.
I don't understand why you cannot qualify for a transplant? my husband probably wouldn't, because of his age, but you're still young. Were you ever given a reason as to why you don't qualify?
Wishing you all the best.

I don't qualify due to my body's chemistry. That's why I mass produce kidney stones. All the top research docs and hospitals have tried everything possible (FDA approved meds & research meds...I've been their guinea pig for a long time)!
Anyway, that's why I don't qualify. My research docs have basically said it would be "wasting" a good kidney because my chemistry would not have changed. I would still have the same issues, just with a different kidney. Make sense? So, with my kidney function on the downward spiral, it's just a guessing game now on how much time is left. Bye for now. :)

Go and google AMBERTOSE...well I think it's how its spelled. I heard it's a miracle thing. I take and since I started taking it I've actually felt better. my boyfriend believed that in 6 months or less my body would have started functioning as its suppose to causing my kidney to work. So check it out and I mean.."don't knock it to you try it"
Besides all that I'm doing great. I've been walking here and there and it's been a great feeling. There are still times where it hurts more than others, but then again I just had the surgery 2 wks ago. I'm so glad I'm not into clubbing..i think I would have been heart broken. Oh and my back is starting to not ache as quickly. Although now it's still resting time...I walked to a building and was outside maybe 3 min and felt like passing out. Yikes! yeah..I took a nap earlier and yet I'm still really tired. Makes me said because I'm trying to practice the geetar..lol.

From what I have seen people who use these lead a fairly normal life because they use it everyday and more comfortable at home. Sorry you don't qualify for a transplant but this might something to look into when you need to go for dialysis.

Yes, I've been informed of all the dialysis machines available. Still, I don't want it. I'm 37 yrs. old and have lived in horrible, excruciating, undescribable pain for over 28 yrs. This all started when I was 9 yrs. old. I feel so much older than my given age. Plus, my body dumps out massive amounts of calcium from my bones, so I also have osteoporosis. My research docs have all told me I have the bones of someone in their 80's.
I believe in quality of life over quantity. I've made my peace with this a long time ago. So, I'm just going to let nature take it's course. My family doesn't agree, except my husband, but it's my life (and death), so it's my decision. I know my family, particularly my Parents, don't want to see my suffer anymore, they just can't let go and come to terms with the inevitable. My husband supports me in my decision.
I'm meeting with a lawyer next month to have a living will and a DNR (do not resuscitate) order drawn up, just in case of a possible situation. I don't anticipate a problem arising, for my husband knows my wishes and it would be his decision if there were no papers drawn up. So, I'll just get the papers so there are no questions or feelings of doubt or guilt on my family's behalf. Also, I absolutely refuse to die in a hospital!! I want to be at home with my family and pets.
I know people can live a somewhat "normal" life on dialysis, but it's not for me....I'm done!! My docs are hoping I make it another year, but it's not in their hands, it's in God's hands. Talk to ya later!

Hi Everyone,
I really wish I had found this message board back in May before I had my surgery. It would have helped alot.
In march I went to the ER with what I thought was just a really bad kidney infection. It turned out that I was experiencing a kindey stone in my left kidney. From what I've read so far my experience was typical since the docs found a mass on my right kidney by accident when the did the CT to evaluate the kidney stone. I ended up being in the hospital for 5 days because the infection I had was E-Coli. I have asked every doctor that I have seen so far if this infection was related to my kideys but I can't get an answer or an explanation as to how I got E-Coli.
After I had a nuclear scan to confirm that my right kidney was not functioning at all I was scheduled for surgery. I had laparoscopic surgery on May 28th. Recovery has been great, after 2 days I came home, started driving after 2 weeks and pretty much back to normal by then except that I get tired very quickly and anything I eat still gives my an upset stomach.
I have done lots of research online to try and answer some of my questions but the more I read the more confused I get. I go back to my surgeon for my follow up appointment tomorrow morning so hopefully I can get some answers.

The pain continues!!
I thought I was fine. After the first week of bed rest my left kidney stopped hurting and everything was good. Now the pain is back today. I'm also getting a stronger pain back in my right side which is making me sad. I don't want to stay on my pain pills all I do is sleep and I have a very busy week.
I had my check up wed. and the doctor said no strenous excercise for 3 month..yikes.
Does anyone know how long it will be before I can soak in water b/c I forgot to ask, but I'm assuming probably around the same amount of time or atleast until all my glue comes off.
I've been walking great, I had a lot of energy for the past week, but I think I used it all up.
Greens! you're up for your big day pretty soon. How are you feeling?

Ren sorry your not felling well. I have had my big day, surgery was moved to Tuesday and I came home on Thursday. Everything went well and was walking around without much problem the evening of my surgery. I have been going on the treadmill for a few minutes at a time a few time times a day. I have lots of little rests throughout the day and try to take a couple naps as well. The only pain I seem to be having is soreness where my incisions are(I have three incisions) and had like a charlie horse type thing on my right side muscle just above the hip last night, I think that is from using the muscles in right side more for getting up, sitting down ect. I have no pain from the kidney area anymore and have not felt this good for a long time. I have cut back on my pain medicine to less than half now and hopefully wont need it anymore by next week. As far as having a bath my discharge paper say Do not have a tub bath until your drain, staples or steri-strips are removed. Take it easy.

Thanks Meta and Greens! Yeah my mother had all my discharge papers and lost them. Lately I've been getting that cramping pain when I try to sleep and that no fun at all. I'm spending a lot of time on my left side which is also very uncomfortable for me. I actually sleep on my stomach so this whole ordeal has been tough for me. I did sleep on my stomach 2 nights in a row last week and I'm wondering if that caused the pain. I mean I'm having pain while walking again. It's 6 something o'clock in the morning, my stomach is hurting and I haven't had any sleep and I don't feel very tired yet. This Is really getting annoying.
Do any of you have any ideas of easy jobs I can do because I need one..
