I have been learning about medical coding and was wondering how many charts an hour or per day are usually expected from coders? I have heard that at one hospital coders are expected to code about ten charts and hour depending on how difficult the charts are. Is this a normal rate for coding?

It varies by type of chart coded, Emergency, Outpatient, Ambulatory Services, Inpatient. Inpatient being the most difficult.

Do coders usually use computer programs to get the codes or do they still look through the coding book for them?
