I am 36 years old. I am getting a ringing in my ears. It sounds like the high pitch noise of water running through pipes. I can only hear it at night when I try to sleep. Sometimes, when I lie on my right hand side, it helps reduce the noise. Maybe fluid in my ear? Could it be an ear wax problem? If so, is there anything I can put in my ear to relieve the problem?

I have the same thing. It is called Tinnitus. It was confirmed by the Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor this past Friday.
I have had a tiny form of it for I guess about a year, due I think to a head bump. However, in the past I would describe the noise level as maybe barely able to hear some crickets a hundred yards away when trying to go to sleep, no problem at all. After a dental procedure last week it got louder. That's when I did a search and learned about Tinnitus.
I was hoping somebody would speak up about my earlier post regarding Lipo-Flavanoids and whether it helped anybody, but no response yet. On Friday the doctor actually prescribed Lipo-F's. I have also read that Ginkgo Biloba might help, and that's next for me.
To tell you the truth, the more you read and search about it the louder it gets. I guess I am one of the unlucky ones that have heard from the doctor that it is permanent and to learn to live with it.

I hope this helps all that need help. I too started suffering with the loud noise in my left ear it started out as a loud tone. I went and got ear wax removal and then went to family the doctor. He said ear was clear of wax and said that he did not see anything wrong. I told him it felt liked it hurt deep inside and that it felt plugged he just didn't listen.
Eventually, the noise got even louder so I made an appointment at an ear nose and throat doctor. Oh boy, was that a joke… I thought, well he is an expert so he will find out my problem for sure. The doctor came in and I told him that I have suffered with this for two weeks he hardly even talked to me. He did a quick look into each ear and down the throat and said did you ever think about getting a hearing test you probably have weak nerve going to ear and have tinnitus. He was in and out in about 2 minutes and sent me on my way.
The noise continued to get louder to the point I felt like ramming my head into a wall to stop the noise. If you want torture, ear noise is the way to go. My son heard about all this that was going on with me and he and I started to read about problems about the ear. I told him I felt I had deep infection and that I could not b low out that ear that I was having problems with. I b low out my ears by holding my nose and keeping my mouth shut and b lowing. You should feel both ears b low out. He did research and found out that he felt my Eustachian tube was blocked. That's the tube going from the ear to the throat.
My daughter also heard about my problems and she is a message therapist and told me she remembered that my neck was jerked a few weeks before and she thought I might have gotten a mild whip lash that showed up a few weeks later and said she felt it was all muscle related. She has given me head and neck deep massages twice and I mean deep. She also used a ear wax removal in that ear with a long cone that you put into your ear and light it with a match. She pulled deep wax out of my ear with this tube that two doctors have said were clean. After she did that my ear did not feel full anymore she also massage the Eustachian tube and I felt it open up.
Today after one week of my own and family healing, the sound is going away not totally but real close. I feel like it is healing up now. Trust me, I went from loud tone noise to a loud hissing sound to the point I knew I could not live like this.

debarylynda,
You are lucky that you were able to find out the real problem and get some relief.
One thing my ENT doctor mentioned was that if I had come in with ringing only in one ear, as in your case, then he would be more concerned and order different and further testing.
However, with ringing in both ears he labeled it Tinnitus. He also showed me the inside of my ears with a camera where I could see the image on a TV. He showed me that I really didn't have any earwax. He also did a hearing test that confirmed that I was losing my hearing of higher pitched tones.
