View Full Version : Does Flonase Help Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?

I am suffering from dynamic eustachian tube dysfunction in my left ear. Symptoms vary from a plugged tender feeling, snapping, crackling while swallowing to twitching and thumping sensations in that ear. Once in a while, I hear myself breathing and feel a very uncomfortable pressure sensation in my ear. Then, the eustachian tube slams shut, severely popping the ear drum. My ENT suggests that I try Flonase, a nasal spray. From what I have read these kinds of sprays are primarly meant for clogged noses and sinuses. My nose rarely feels clogged. My ETD was caused by an injury to the left ear. It stands to reason that the problem is at the ear end of the eustachian tube, not the nose end. My great concern about trying this spray is not if it doesn't work, but if it makes the dynamic nature of the ETD worse. From that I mean, it may make the crackling, twitching, thumping and popping worse. I am already very frustrated and can't handle more pain and discomfort. Also, I am already trying 100 mg of voltaren for pain and inflammation, serzone 50 mg for pain induced depression, empracet (codeine/acetaminophen) for pain as needed and rivotril (clonazepan) for sedation as needed. I would appreciate input from anyone who has tryed this spray for their eustachian tube disorder. Many thanks.

Hello Nathan:
I have tried Flonase and it does offer some relief. I don't have any trouble with my nose either, but it seems to relieve some of the pressure you are feeling in your ears. Aim the nozzle out towards the Eustachean Tubes when you use it. You will only need it once a day, but it does help somewhat.

I went back to the ENT on Thursday of last week. He looked at the tubes and said they were in place and open and exactly where they should be. He does not undestand why I should have pressure in the back of my head and neck. These headaches are getting unbearable. I am going to go for tests to see if there is something else going on inside my head. Let me know if the Flonase works.
