Hi everyone, my name is John.

I just moved from Mississippi to Utah (Salt Lake City). The altitude difference: Utah is one mile higher above sea level than Mississippi. I lived in Mississippi all my life so i'm sure my body is well adjusted to the weather/altitude/culture to MS.

The reason why im posting is because since I have moved, I have been bloated, full of never-ending gas, having to go to the restroom more often. This is incredibly painful and I have needed to buy new pants because of the bloating! I wake up in the middle of the night because of the pain.

Anyone have any idea how to solve/treat this problem? Anyone even heard of this?

Welcome to UT. You picked an unusually snowy winter to move here. I moved to UT from the midwest about 13 years ago. Culture shock aside, my body had to make adjustments also. While I haven't heard of the gas/bloating concern. It is my understanding that frequent urination when adapting is common. (Something to do with adapting to the changes in oxygen levels.) I have also heard of people who had trouble sleeping when adjusting also.

Some of the things I understand should help:

Drink lots of water. Keep yourself hydrated.
Avoid drinking alcohol and reduce caffeine while adapting.
Eat a higher carb, low fat diet.
Stay hydrated. Stay hydrated. Stay hydrated.

Do you actually live in SLC or do you live above bench level or in the mountains. If you are up in the mountains, going down into the valley for visits may help a bit.

On a side note, you might also consider using a humidifier. SLC is in the middle of the desert and the humidity is MUCH lower than in MS. I ended up with sinus problems because of the dry air. Also, make sure you limit your time outside on 'red air' days and during inversions.

You didn't say how long you have been here. If you continue to feel bad, you should visit a doctor.

While it make time to adapt to the weather/culture/altitude, UT is a beautiful. I hope you come to love it as I have.

I've been in UT for about 3-3 1/2 months now and its still really really bad. Driving my girlfriend crazy! lol. I actually live in the Valley (Herriman) so i'm lucky there I guess.

I was just talking with my mother, (which really researches things when she doesn't understand something) and she was listening to this guy on health radio (xm radio) about this guy who had really bad gas problems and was driving him crazy as well. Deja Vu right?

Turns out, the guy eats a lot of carbohydrates and so do I. I probably eat more carbohydrates than most people. (each meal contains a lot of carbohydrates probably) From what they were saying on the radio, I have too much "yeast growth" in my gut. Which in turn causes the bloating/gas/etc...

I am a ITALIAN FREAK! I love pasta and rice and beans... thats probably my issue here :(.

Solution: Probiotics. Yogurt form from what I have heard, I hope there is a pill form because yogurt is not on the top of my "delight" list.

When I moved from NM to VA my periods were every two weeks and heavy at that. Went to the doctor and was told it could take up to six months for my body to adjust to my new enviromnent.

I hope you feel better and that you can enjoy your new state.
