I live in Connecticut. Can anyone give me advice on applying for SSI. I really need suggestions. Should I include medical records as well as Pysch. records? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Don't waste time trying to do it on your own. A friend of mine had Lupus and the arteries were closing in her legs. She had trouble walking. They denied her for 2 and a half years. The only why she got it is when they actually cut her leg off. They actual told her that the SSI doctors feel she can go back to her old job as a waitress. Can you believe that? Get a lawyer that specializes is SSI. Most don't charge you anything unless they get you SSI.

hi tattos! i go my ss when i was living in mass. i tried on my own first time and got denied. i got a lawyer next time and i got it. my lawyer took 1/3, but i still got a sizable ck because they go back to when you first applied.
i was wondering, do you have any other health issues besides fm? the more diagnosises, the better. yes, the more med records you have, the better!
good luck, keep posting on here, everyone is glad to help out....bevann

by the way, i got my ss about 15 yrs ago, so things might be a little different now.

hi tats,
you will have to apply on your own. if you are denied you will need an attorney at that point to appeal. take all your medical records, most especially any psych records. tell your doctors what you are doing and get them ready. i got it on my first try.
they said, even tho we feel you are capable physically of working the stress is more than you can deal with emotionally. so they gave it to me. it was my records from my shrink that did it. and her letter to them.
have someone help you fill out the bizillion forms. always take a friend or relative with you to every appt with social security. do not try to be strong and brave there. i cried more than once. in utter confusion. i was more fragil and afraid then. new at fibro and its changes.
hope this helps you.
peace,

I have FM, Chndromalacia patella, ulnar neuritis, sublexation of right shoulder, PCOS, Major Depression and PTSD. The problem is getting some of the back records. For some reason I couldn't obtain them a long time ago for something else. I will try , once again, to get everything I can. Should I get specific notes from doctors?

I was on it once before for psych. reasons. Hopefully this will help. Do you have to go for a review every year? Thanks for your insight!

Thank you. I will start calling for my records today! Starting with Psych first! Oh do I need an appointment or just go in? Can I go in pending my medical records. Sometimes it's taken me over 6 weeks to get records and I have to pay for them!

MY PSYCHIATRIST WILL NOT GIVE ME MY MEDICAL RECORDS!!!!! I am so upset. They will only release them to the state. How do I know what is in them! I don't want ALL my personal business out there. How can they do that? I just want to cry...actually I already did. There is certain info I WANT NO ONE to know. Please help:confused:.

There is a medical board of ethics that regulates doctors. I had a doctor refuse to give me my medical records because he claimed I owned him money. I did owe him because he did not know what he was talking about. I wrote to them, filed a complaint and they made him give me my records. I am in Illinois. Your state might be different...but I don't think he can refuse to give you your records.

I really think that is so messed up. It is our personal history. I am going to ask my dad who is a doctor. I am just so sickened by this..

As a matter of fact, a friend of mine threated to sue a Shrink for not giving her her medical file. She was going to take the doc to small claims court. The doc ended up giving the file to her.

hi kiddo,
there are always things our shrink knows that are private. mine also said he would not give me mine. he said they only make sense to him as he purposely does this to protect me. he said his notes would not make sense to the folks at social security either. social security will ask for a letter from your shrink. i went ahead and asked so i could read what they wrote. curious not afraid. both my shrinks were kind and wrote honest letters that actually gifted me with a peace. their words said it all for me.
see, i knew in order to get the ssi i would have to let it all out. i also totally understood that realistically the person or persons who read my history would only see me as a case, not as a real entity. i am just work to them. so i got over what they would know, knowing it really only mattered to me.
i go every 3 or 5 years for a review. i see a travelling shrink who never gets who i am right. no matter, he always says the right thing and my checks keep coming. last time i saw him in a parking lot at night in a van. all these cars were parked with people waiting to see him. i laughed so hard. it looked like the pusher man was in town. poor guy was overworked, confused and i led him thru the process. he was sweet, young and just doing his best.
try not to worry about your history. it is what it is and no one in the gov really sees you. they see a case number. sometimes impersonal is good.

Thank you- I will discuss it with my new pysch. this Friday and voice my concerns. Hopefully a letter may be all they need. I was on SSI in the past and was approved right away but my sister who was applying for SSDI....it took her over 2 years to get help. And she only got help after hiring an attorney. I think I will do that. And in the meantime she lost EVERYTHING! I really want to get the ball rolling because my health insurance will end from my ex in October and no one will take you with Fibro. patients. My father, who is a physician, and his friend, who is on the board for different insurances, informed me. Maybe it's like that way in CT or maybe everywhere. Crossing my fingers and saying prayers. Thanks!

i forgot to say the reason my shrink made cryptic notes only he understood was to protect the privacy of all his patients. he is an old hippie and distrustful of the gov. so he protects us by making notes that make sense only to him. actually when he told me that i felt really protected and respected by him.

Unfortunately I don't think it was done cryptic because it isn't being given to me because it could be detrimental to my well-being. So I think he must of made some pretty intense observations! See what happens;).

hi bella,
give yourself some peace by knowing that anything he observed, you already know within yourself. we all have "stuff" we prefer to keep within, yet shrinks have a magic way of seeing, often seeing what we cannot or do not want to see.
sadly there are shrinks who "think" they are protecting us by not being totally up front. sometimes they are right, not always.
you can always ask him. and if you are not satisfied with the answer, ask again. your shrink has a responsibility to you. to be honest and gentle.
take care and never forget no matter what life has handed you, the rest of it belongs to you. this is your life.
