My 7 yr old son has adhd and cant read, he has memory problems also....when we do homework, i can show him words, letters, numbers, etc...and after a minute he cant remember what it is....he was dx with adhd in aug of 07 and we cant get a 'medium' with the medicine...he is still too hyper....my son is in kindergarten and I will not hold him back...he is being tested with a specialist through the school, just waiting on results now, we know that he has a learning disability, but with a medical disability also....my son knows his colors and his language is great...the problem is just remembering and reading...
any suggestions?

thank you for your replies, and God Bless

shannonb72,

It looks like your son is getting lots of help via the school, and other posters who have experience with children will I'm sure chime in here with their experiences.

One thing I can suggest is to consider that your son may learn better through kinetic movement. I learn better when I can see something -- I associate things with visual patterns. My husband has to hear things -- he has a good memory for sounds and learns best through auditory channels. Other people need the reinforcement of body movements. Some children actually do better when they can act things out using large body movements or dance. This of course is contrary to most classroom rules, and people like this are frowned upon in "normal" classrooms. This is unfortunate, as we all learn via different methods. I hope that you are able to find a way to help your son.

Hello, Im dyslexic, which means i have a lot of problem with short term memory retention as your son seems too! I would echo the person below (already forgotton thier name, soory:() but learning with movement helps so much, even just moving stuff around on the table, movement doesnt have to be jumping around the room as you do stuff! hope that made sense! x
