Hello from the UK. I found this board whilst googling to fin out what's wrong with me.

About 3 years ago Istarted experiencing a crackling and distortion in my left ear in direct correlation with loud noise (but not that loud, everyone else could bear it, e.g lots of people talking in a room or a loud crash or bang). My G.P (erm..physician??) couldn't see anything wrong so gave me a nasal spray because he thought it was related to the fact that I sometimes get mild hayfever.

I then developed a pulsing pressure in my right ear (that wasn't my heartbeat) that could be triggered by yawning or coughing, but was just as likely to be random. This later developed in both ears. Referred to ENT consultant, fobbed off, wanted a second opinion, got an MRI scan and apparently everything was A-O.K.

Getting used to living with what is diagnosed as 'tinnitus', when this week my right ear/throat has really kicked off. It feels like my eustashion (sp?) tube is being pulled and twisted, accompanied by a lot of pain. It kind of vibrates when I breath move my head or do anything really.

I've got important exams in just over a week and I don't know what i'm going to do. Any advice or idea what is wrong?

Rorschach,

Nothing clearly stands out for the layman to recognize. The new "twisted" eustachian tube feeling sounds like a middle ear infection to me.

You really DO need an appointment with a GOOD ENT specialist and not someone whose going to fob you off. A longstanding infection with pus buildup could be responsibe for your sysmptoms,

Another layman thought is perhaps PATULOUIS EUSTACHIAN TUBE. There are several sufferers on this board, give a look at some of the older posts.

I have been experiencing the same symptoms as you. I have not had an MRI done as of yet though. Mine all started after my braces came off. I have crackling, popping in both ears and on my right side my ear making that pulsating noise anytime I bend over or turn my head a certain way. It totally drives me crazy. My doctor at first thought it was allergies and he put me on allegra D, but that seemed to make the cracking noises worse. He then said it was Eustation Tube Dysfunction. I'm going back to the doctor on Thursday so hopefully he can give me some idea of what to do next. Is your tinnintus constant?

I will keep you informed of what happens, and I wish you the best of luck

infection hasn't been mentioned, i presume that would present either throuh observation of nose/throat or the mri tho.

this is the nhs man, you get what you're given ;)

...PATULOUIS EUSTACHIAN TUBE...

Thanks! I'll do some research.

hey, me again.

Has anyone else had a problem in the ear/throat that feels like a kind of vibration? this was really triggered in the last couple of days by being a passenger in a car, the vibrations went right through me to my ear :S

My ears also feel incredibly 'exposed' to the environment. If I go outside I cannot bear a breeze in my ear, it goes right through me and causes a really sharp pain, it feels like there's no protection between my ear and my throat/eustacion tube at all. After a while of this my throat can start tightening up and going numb. This is both painful and scary.

Thanks for reading, and any similar experiences/insights would be greatly appreciated.

Take care everyone.

Hello,

Was just checking out some posts on here and came across your messages. You should both check out tempero mandibular joint disorder. If this happened when your braces came of Tracie then it's very likely this could be the cause of your ear problems. Check out the tmjd board on healthboards, try putting eustachian tube or ears etc in to the search engine on that board. Glad my dentist was up on the ear symptoms with tmjd otherwise I still wouldn't have a clue what was going on with me. A lot of ENT's don't have a clue about this.

Hi Rorchach

I would like to tell you that I have otosclerosis. My problems started ten years ago and the first thing I experienced was noise sensitivity to certain sounds (i.e. some male voices, noise from dishes in the kitchen, an airplane passing over).I visited an ENT then who ordered an audiogram. The audiogram showed a minimal hear loss <20 DB in different frequencies and it was evaluated as normal.
So he told me to do nothing about it. Some years later my hearing deteriorated and then after several audiograms and several ENT's I was diagnosed with otosclerosis.
From what I have read the noise sensitivity is always a by-product of sensorineural hear loss. So please have your hearing checked. I am wondering why your doctor did not mention this.
For your information my condition also begun after I moved my braces off but the ENT seems to believe that this is a co-incidence.

TRACIEL,

In your case which started after the braces were removed, it's almost certainly a case involving the TMJ joint. You probably developed some tiny arthritic spurs that fit together ok TIL THE BRACES CAME OFF. You are likely hearing the banging and scraping of these spurs together.
My guess is that your jaw will soon adjust to the new fit and wear away the offending "clankers."
