Hi, I now have a severe hearing loss due to head trauma from an epileptic seizure. It only happened a few days ago but I was apparently in the kitchen when I had a grand mal seizure. I hit my head on the counter first and then on the tile floor. When I woke, I had blood/fluid coming out my ears. I've had fainting spells (heart condition now under control) since I was a kid and epilepsy for 2 years. Both often result in blows to the head. I guess I finally pushed my brain too far. The ER said I had severe hearing loss due to head trauma. I have to see an ENT next week for further testing. I was hoping it might come back but so far, nothing. I'm trying desperately to remember everything from the ASL classes I took in school 9 yrs ago and my husband is trying to learn too. I'm really very scared. I've always loved signing but never thought I'd be dependent on it. Sorry, guess I just needed to vent a bit. I am enjoying reading your board.

Gosh,
I'm having trouble imagining a blow so hard that it would cause blood/fluid???? to come from both ears without killing you.
I have a dear friend who's had his epilepsy controlled to the point of one grand mal in the last 30 years....how are your drugs working?
My guess is that you will need a whole head MRI to see if any damage was done to the hearing centers of the brain.
Other than that, I'm sort of mystified. One ear damage with a fall would be understandable, but two is hard to comprehend.
Let us know what the ENT says although I think you need a neurologist for a full evaluation.

Hi, I don't understand it either. No, the meds are not working and we've been through most of them. The neuro is sort of at a loss for what to do. The hospital was going to do an MRI but because I have a pacemaker, I'm not allowed one. I keep waking up in the am thinking it's all a bad dream and that I can hear fine, but so far it hasn't happened. I have an appt with the ENT on Wed. I hope he can help me out here. Anyway, thanks for your response.
