stina3246 02-21-2008, 09:30 AM I've had the feeling of a lump in my throat now for about 3 months. I've been told by 3 doctors (GI, ENT and GP) that it's globus most likely related to acid reflux or Post Nasal Drip and/or a thyroid nodule . I had the nodule removed 3 weeks ago (right lobectomy) and I was hoping the symptoms would go away. It's better but not gone and I'm very dissapointed. The ONLY other symptom I have which may or may not be related is occasional (like 0-5x a day) a sharp shooting pain in my left ear. It lasts about 3-4 seconds and then goes away. Almost like a muscle spasm. I do have 2 teeth missing from lost fillings and must have root canals. I saw a dentist in Oct. and other then that things looked OK in there.
I've had an endoscopy and a larynoscopy as well that show no growths, tumors or other obstructions. My GI doctor said he even LOOKED for something he could biopsy and couldn't find ANYTHING.
SO
Other then cancer (which is my worst fear) what could it be?
I have VERY BAD anxiety over this so I don't want someone coming on telling me stories of people who had the exact same thing and died 6 months later please. I need some reassurance. I'm very scared and stressed and that makes the feeling worse.
Can anyone help me.:(

Hi,
Wondering what your resolution was. My husband has a lump in his throat for a month or six weeks now. Long enough to be worrysome.
Thanks,
Elizabeth

No resolution yet. It started while I was on a business trip the last week of Nov. and there was a lot of pain and pressure as well as the lump feeling. That subsided once I started taking Prevacid but the lump feeling stays. Actually it comes and goes. It's better in the morning and gets worse through the day. I've had whole days without it. Today it's really bugging me but my anxiety is really high right now.
Does your husband have a physical lump or just the feeling? He should see his doctor right away since it hasn't resolved. I think this doesn't really go away on it's own. From what I've read and been told by others as well as my doctors...the feeling is actually pretty common and MOST of the time is not a danger, just an annoyance.
ladybird37 03-01-2008, 06:52 PM I had this problem for many years I had every test there is and nothing was found! I was at my witts end I felt like I had a ball in my throat and Kinda like my shirt was to tight around my neck. Finally with the help of a wonderful doctor he put me on muscle relaxers and guess what? no more ball in my throat. I took them for a while then I didnt need them anymore. every blue moon I will get that feeling back (when really stressed) and I will just take a muscle relaxer and it goes away.. Just wanted to share this. Hope this helps
Take Care - Ladybird
lroberts21 04-10-2008, 10:53 AM hey ladybird 37, what kind of muscle relaxers were you put on?? My Dr. says this lump feeling in my throat is acid reflux. To last all day everyday though. It doesnt just come & go its always there. He gave me valuim, but that didnt help!!Any suggestions or does this seem like your problem? Thanks
girlie77 04-10-2008, 03:04 PM hi Stina3246 Idont have any scare story to tell you so dont worry. I to have the same type feeling in my throat since the beg of dec and like you was very worried about cancer.. really really scared. I was so worried that i was even having bad dreams. Mine also seems to get worse as the evening comes in.No doc has been able to tell me much and keep putting it down to stress. Ilive in the UK and the waiting list to see ENT is 6 months so i went private and got seen in feb but still no answers but did tell me my throat kooked fine. that helped me relax but still not an answer. Do you ever feel that the "lump" has moved to your chest at times? have you ever had a bad taste in your throat? I do on and off its driving me insaine!! Keep us posted on your progress or if like me lack of it. Sometimes i feel like its taking over my life you likely feel the same. I have been looking up different sites all over and i am beginning to think it could be some sort of reflux but would ENT not have said?????
keep your chin up, i know how you feel. lol
kdude119 04-14-2008, 09:59 PM hi, i know how you feel
i believe its a spasms and your cricopharnygeal is locking up, if you search that online you will find much information.. all i found for remedies was muscle relaxants and drinking warm fluids.. and that it will resolve itself as time passes.. external stress and acid reflux can cause it...
stina3246 05-09-2008, 10:46 PM Well, guys.....here's an update. I went ahead and had a CT scan just for peace of mind (had the endocopy and ultrasound already...both showed nothing) The CT scan was fine too. The doctors...all 5 of them tell me I'm fine. They refuse to perscibe meds for me but I REALLY think it's some type of esophageal spasm. That's REALLY what it feels like! Luckily the lump in my throat feeling only comes back about 2-3 X a week and does not usually last all day. I do get an ache....not a sore throat, it feels like I pulled a muscle. I'm usually fine in the morning, some days all day, others it gets worse as the day goes on. If I can lay down and relax a bit it may go away.
I have been taking Zyrtec for post nasal drip now and that seems to help but it causes other problems. I think I've had to swallow kinda hard all my life because of the mucus. Now with the Zyrtec I don't but my throat is not used to it so I end up swallowing air which in turn makes me burp stuff back up.
The dentist actually perscribed me pain killer for an infection in the tooth. I found out that it totally relaxed my throat, all symptoms would go away for days after taking one of those pills but I'm out of those and the doctors all tell me to just deal with it. I'm not as scared as i was....things are much better but why can't my doctors help me with the some type of pain killer or muscle relaxer? They won't even give me Xanax. They just tell me to take tylenol. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm considering going to a physchiatrist to see if he can help me with the anxiety related to this.
CDMTAM28 05-16-2008, 11:02 AM Like some of you, I too, have experienced the scary feeling of a "food stuck in my throat". This began in March of 2008 and since then my symptoms have worsened. I had the endoscopy and the barium swallow and of course both were negative. I was in the ER 3 times for esophageal spasms. None of these alarming symptoms were taken seriously and no doctor has yet to address these issues. However, the most concerning symptom I have and the one that started it all is that I have pain on both sides of my throat (but not internal just around the throat) that is excructiating. It will come and go throughout the day and is not related to food or drinks or anything. I have been put on prevacid and have been told that it is "muscle pain" from studying. This is a load of crap and I am so sick of doctors making up lies to get me out of the office. I have been doctor searching for 3 months for some bit of relief with no avail. I am in medical school now so that is probably making things worse - I continue to try to diagnose myself. I really hope someone has some light to shed on the issue of the anterior neck pain. Maybe it is glands or lymph nodes but there is no palpable swelling of either.
I hope to hear back soon.
Thanks
stina3246 05-24-2008, 12:27 AM I do wonder if it has something to do with my thyroid levels but I do have some exciting info that may help a few people. I have been having either the globus feeling and/or pain and pressure in my throat daily since November. I even started to have issues swallowing. It didn't really get much better after surgery (The globus improved a little but the pain was still pretty bad) but about 2 weeks ago I began drinking Aloe Vera juice. I get the stuff from Walmart with the berry flavor and i have not had pain or Globus in my throat now for over 1 week! My throat now feels almost completely normal! I was going to wait a little while to tell you guys to see if it lasted but since I just got Redmaples post i figured I'd answer.
I know this won't fix everyone but if you haven't tried it, it can't hurt. It's an aquired taste but it's not bad. At first i mixed it with fruit juice but I like it now on it's own. I've tried the gel form which is more pure but it doesn't disolve well so it makes your drinks lumpy. I think that my issue really must have been LPR or acid reflux and the Aloe Vera is calming my stomache enough that it is not bothering my throat. I'll keep Ya'll posted!
stina3246 06-05-2008, 10:41 PM Update,
The pain and globus feeling was gone for nearly 2 weeks while taking the aloe. Then I got a REALLY bad infected tooth and BAM. It all came back. I'm having surgery on my teeth on Wed. Everyone please pray that maybe the infection (Which the dentist said may have been going on for a year!) is the root of the problem and once taken care of will fix my throat issues.
PittsburghLyn 06-06-2008, 06:05 PM In my case, always felt like food would get stuck, it turned out to be caused by GERD, and Prevacid took care of it.
stina3246 06-06-2008, 09:47 PM I've tried Prevacid, prilosec, aciphex and a few others. I would feel a little improvement for a while but it wouldn't last. I started taking Zyrtec for post nasal drip and that had the biggest effect. The problems didn't go away but they did lesson and the ear pain and clogging cleared up completely. Now I'm trying Nexium but I just started it last night so we'll see. The one thing that had the biggest effect was Hydrocodone that my dentist gave to me for the tooth ache. It was a very low dose but if i took it as soon as I started feeling pain it would stop it and I'd be fine the rest of the day. Unfortunately none of the other doctors will give me that or anything resembling it. They want me to take Tylenol but that does absolutely nothing.
Another thing, I am being transfered from a position that I hated back into a position I enjoyed. Today was my last day in the position I hated, I feel better today then I have in a week.
