Hey! I'm 15 years old and I've just become victim to a very annoying sensation in my right ear. Its been going on for a month or more. I would describe it as thumping or feeling my heartbeat in my ear. But the thumping isnt as regular as a heartbeat. The thump is somewhat irregular, (although it could be my heartbeat because I do have an irregular heartbeat according to my doctor. I was told to drink caffeine free pop/soda and that made my heartbeat normal, but gosh, I'm a teenager and I need caffeine for energy, so I started drinking caffeined pop/soda again and the irregular heartbeat is back. Okay, but back to why I came here: THUMPING! It happens all throughout the day, sometimes worse than other times. It happens when I'm sitting or standing. It just comes whenever it pleases.

I dont know what it is but its very annoying. How can I make it stop? It isnt painful, its just annoying. Sometimes the thumping is so loud that I smack myself on the ear but the thumping still doesnt subside. Is this my heartbeat beating in my ear or what is it? Like right now it is thumping. Today is one of the worst days ever. The thumping is coming just about every minute and lasting about 30 seconds.

Please respond to me at ashes2ash@aol.com, or you can post. If you write me via email please put in the subject line, "thumping in ear."

I hope someone can help me out. I really need some information on this problem and ways to possibly stop it. I'm 15 years old and I have to put up with a stupid thump. Ha ha.

Hello,

I have a similar problem and hope that I can help. My ear starting making a thumping" or "fluttering" noise about a year ago. At first I thought that I had water in my ear or an ear infection. After several weeks of this annoying noise I saw an ENT. We did a hearing test and an MRI and determined that I have Tensor Tympani syndrome. Or as he called it a "stapedial click". It's a muscle spasm in your inner ear. Kind of like when your eye twitches or a muscle in your body spasms. It was so bad at times that I thought I would go insane. He put me on low doses of Diazepam. I still have the thumping. It has never totally gone away. But when it acts up I take the diazapam (also known as Valium) and it seems to settle it down again. If it gets really extreme there is a surgery they can do where they cut the offending muscle in the ear. But there are risks associated with that.

I hope that I was of some help with your problem. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that you are having these auful problems. I have had the thumping for a very long time and I can't stand it. First, I had botox injected in the roof of my mouth to freeze the muscles. This stopped it, but caused patulous eustachian tube dysfunction. Next, I had the muscles in my L/H ear cut. When the botox wore off the thumping returned exactly the same as before. Next, I had the patulous eustachian tube corrected by an injection performed by Dr. Dennis S. Poe at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. This stopped the thumping as well, but last December it returned. Now, I believe, I should start botox injections again, and see Dr. Poe if the patulous eustachian tube condition returns. It is very frustrated. I have seen seven ENT's so far and I continue to suffer horribly. I fully understand what your going through.

What did your doctor say was causing the thumping? You might consider following his advice regarding stopping your caffeine intake...after all, what's more important, your heart or your caffeine...think about it......

I forgot to warn you last time I posted. Whatever you do, don't smack your ear. That is very dangerous. You could bring about problems far worse and maddening than the thumping. You can cause an injury that will ruin the rest of your life. I know from personal experience. My hellish problems were caused by whacking my left ear in a fit of rage because I couldn't get the wax out. Please don't make the same mistake.

Does everyone's thumping happen even while they are standing, sitting, walking, etc.? Also is your thumping constant?

I have just started having a kind of thumping in my left ear, but only when I lie down on my stomach with my right ear to the pillow or bed. Could this be the same thing?

I just got a simple "cold" that had me stay home from work for a day and it caused my ear to start thumping, because of the congestion that went into my ear. My guess. It has been one week now, and my congestion is gone, and my ear pops now on and off and I think it is finally going to stop thumping after one of these pops. My hope. It is sporatic. It sounds like a heartbeat. It doesn't hurt. Loud sounds are annoying because of an echoing sensation. I was thinking of going to an ear specialist to get my ears cleaned out. I am thinking it may be that when I get congested, the stuff may be combined with something in my ear that just needs to be cleaned. I am giving this another week to see if it clears up, and if not, I will probably get some advice. I hope it is not going to be an ongoing problem. It is allergy season here too, and I may have developed some ragweed allergies too, it is hard to determine if it was just a cold or an allergy. I really don't have a whole lot of time for doctors, so I tend to try to build up my immune system by taking care of ailments with plenty of water and soups during these times. I ususally don't go to a doctor unless I am in an unbearable physical state of some sort. My mother had a red rubber pouch that she used to fill with hot water and put under a towel on my pillow and I would lay my head on it and if I swam and water got in my ear when I was a kid, it would come out easier with the heat from the heating pad. She also used to put some kind of oil in my ear and it would plug up for the day, then bring out some crap on the towel after laying that way for an evening. I had swimmer's ear when I was 12, and they flushed out my ear and it was very painful to get that done. But it took away the problem. I seem to have always had less of a capability to hear out of that same ear than my good ear. The problem is always with the same ear. I think it may be deformed. If anyone knows of problems or answers or has any advice, I try things out. Thank you in advance.
