Hi,

Anyone have success w/Rifaxamin? If so, what was your experience like? Any side effects? My gastro Dr. wants to put me on it, but I'd like more info.

Thanks,
Carol

My girlfriend was on it for a short time, she had to stop because of wicked headaches. I stayed away from it because I'm not crazy about side effects or taking prescription drugs. I currently use herbal remedies that seem to do the trick. It can't hurt to try it if you're really bad, you should know within the first precription if you are going to react to it.

I've responded before about Rifaximin but it helped me mostly with the bloating. No side effects for me. Its an antibiotic that doesn't get absorbed in the blood stream; it mostly stays in the GI tract. I think it's been used in the past for traveller's diarrhea. I usually get a Rx once or twice a year when bloating becomes a constant problem. Other than that, taking fiber and staying away from spicy foods keeps everything in check for me. It took about 5 years to find the combination of things that worked for me. Once something started working though, I think the stress level went down and the mental or "worrying" part of IBS was diminished.
