I am kind of concern about my 2 year old newphew. Last night I was observing him at a birthday party. He didn't want to play with the other childern of is age (although he was the following the older girls around) He says a few words but his vocabulary is not enhanced as it should be. He likes logs ex. comerical logos he can match them up quite well, but he doesn't do the cognivite puzzles. I am kind of worried that these are signs of austic or a child who has attention deficit disorder. Can someone please tell me what are the sympots of a child with add or austim and if my newphew has this symptoms.

ItalianWoman,

I am out of my domain on Autism. What follows is what I've gleaned through reading:

Some characteristics of autism are repetitive movements such as hand flapping, a tendency to organize toys such as lining them up rather than playing with them, detachment from the outside world, and oversensitivity such as feeling pain when touched by a loved one.

An older autistic child might display advanced knowledge (well beyond his years) in ONE field or perhaps even in one facet of a field/subject. Another indicator is usually word choice for a child that age, e.g., "cogitating" instead of "thinking."

Some or all of the above symptoms may present themselves in Autistic Spectrum disorders.

No one including self had any idea I was ADHD until my high school years. Except for unusal hyperactivity (even for a two year old) I doubt if it can be detected in a 2 yo.

Italianwoman,

How is the child's sleep? Look at this post. It maybe a bit old.. but it is a good one. ;) Younger than 5 years of age is often too young to officially diagnosis mild cases of Autism and/or ADD/ADHD disorders. Oftimes in preschool age children.. sleep deprivation due to many factors can cause symptoms that hint at other disorders. Good luck and thank-you for taking such an interest in the child's welfare.

Italianwoman,

I am a mother of a 3 year old. Let me tell you your nephew is completely normal. At 2 year old, they have not fully developed their social skills. They don't really interact with children their own age until around 2.5 year old. However, they like to follow older kids because they want to be taken care of. Their speech ability has not been fully developed at age 2. My son can't say much at 2. But a few months after turning 2, he started saying all sort of very cut things. I was also really worried for a while, but it turned out that I have worried for nothing.

If your nephew can play with a toy, listen to music and watch TV or read a book for 30 minutes at a stretch, then he is ok.
