I see that our original thread was closed because of length. I hope the old members see this as a continuation of our discussions. Mary Annie-I really hope you find this as I was unable to get back to you! For all the Chantix users-good luck, it worked for us!

Hi,
Don't worry Beau, I found this. I don't get it, what's the point of having these boards if groups of people cannot benefit from them? Am I missing the point or what? Anyway, I hope alot of people can be helped by seeing what our experiences were, good and bad. Time to hit the treadmill to work off those 10 unwanted pounds! (That's the bad!!!!!!!!!!!!) ~ Mary

Hi Beau & Mary Annie,
I found the new thread too! Both myself and my hubby are still smoke free. :) I am now 5 months and he is 4 months.
There still are days that we both would just love to have one smoke, but neither of us will give in, which I think is really helping the both of us.
I'll be glad when the warmer weather gets here and I can get outside and start walking & riding my bike. Maybe then I'll be able to shake off those few unwanted pounds that I put on since quitting.
Take care

Hi,Casino (we don't have a real name for you!)
Glad you both are doing well too-I'm working on my 10lb. gain also. I give myself two months to get rid of it!!
But, not having to think about smoking is worth the pounds, for sure. Isn't life more simple this way? Not to mention healthier! I do still think about it, a crave now and then,...but I will not go back to being an addict!!
Stay well everyone!

Welcome back Casino and Hi again Beau!
So basically, besides a few cravings here and there and an extra 10 pounds, we're all doing great and are alot healthier now that we're smoke free. I'd say that that should be inspiration to anyone to quit smoking - don't you agree? Looking back, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Sure it was hard for the first couple of months but nothing we couldn't handle. Hang in there everyone... ~ Mary

Hello,
Hope you guys still check this board once in a while. Well, I'm still a non smoker, but sad to say a fat one! I sure am having a heck of a time losing those unwanted pounds and may have gained a couple more. I've been watching my diet and walking on my treadmill to no avail. How are you all doing? Any of you struggling like me? Please let me know - perhaps we can give each other some pointers (guess you wouldn't want mine!!!)
Maybe we should move over to the weight loss board??? Any suggestions...
Best regards,
MaryAnnie

I'll take all the pointers I can get. Afew extra pounds is alot better then gasping for air in the middle of the night or from walking up the stairs, even from walking room to room for that matter.

Five small meals a day instead of the traditional three, and portion control I lost 67 lbs this way. Of course I went to the gym as well.
Example: breakfast a slice of low cal bread toasted with a tsp of honey and half a banana, Mid morn snack 1 oz of part skim cheese and five low fat triscuits, lunch 1 cup of lettuce and 1 chicken breast cut into salad tsp of clear dressing, mid afternoon snack fruit and a handful of nuts, dinner depending on the type of meat either 6 oz of chicken or fish, 4 oz of beef or pork, 1/2 cup of carb of your choice and 1/2 cup of cooked veggie or 1 cup of raw veggie butter 1 table spoon 2x a day. use salt sparingly and only 24 oz of a caffeinated beverage a day. Only eat beef or pork once a week and pasta once a week. Baked potato should be of medium or small size.
Hope this helps:)

Wow Liamsmom!! Congratulations. I have gained too much weight since quitting smoking, so I started a diet 2 weeks ago. I don't know if we are allowed to name diet types, but I have been on one similar to this and it is suppose to regulate our metabolism and sugar. I know the other diet always worked for me so we will see how this one goes. So far, 4 pounds in two weeks. A little slow for me, but I am older and now smoke free, so it may be harder. I am all for tips on dieting. I am not much for exercising mainly because I don't have time. I do try to park further away when shopping so I have to walk further. I hope little things like that help. Keep the tips coming!

Hi Mary Annie and All-
I have gained weight-about 12 pounds-and that is not good! I've always been a little heavy, so I know what to do to lose, but right now not the motivation. Still smoke-free but , I tell you, I've had some monster craves recently-and my last cig was about 170 days ago. So, I'm concentrating on dealing with that and if it means I eat a bit too much, so be it. I did join a diet club, but I haven't really followed as I should. Vacation next week so I'll wait til I get back. Mary Annie-glad you are doing so well-

Hi Beau and everyone,
Yup, I know exactly what you're saying but not smoking is definitely worth a few extra pounds. I was walking alot on the treadmill but was putting on muscle and not losing an inch so decided to cut back a bit and see what happens. I've never been much of an eater and am still a bit fleshy (as my Grandma used to say). I can't eat the 5 small meals a day everyone says you're supposed to. I snack on nuts and string cheese and am trying to cut out a can of soda everyday and drink juice instead. The problem with that is that the citrus in juice gives me cold sores so my lips are now covered with 4 cold sores. I'm laughing as I am writing this - I could just go on and on. Guess I'm just one wierd duck!!!!!!! Anyway Beau, have a great vacation and keep in touch.
Hey Simonsez, how's it going? I'm anxious to hear how you're doing...

Hi Mary Annie!!
It's been a while...just looking over the posts....still have the weight gain but still smoke-free since October 29,2007!! No real craves, just thoughts-guess they will always be there. I've read so much about Chantix and some negatives-glad it worked for me and had no issues. Hope all is well!

Hey Beau,
All is great here. Still smoke free and darn proud of it! I read over these boards once in a while and can't understand some of the difficulties people have with the Chantix when it worked so well for us and alot of my friends. I also still fight the weight issue but I can still fit into my clothes, even if they are a bit snug! Maybe we should move over to the weight loss boards???
It's always nice hearing from you - hope everyone else is doing as well as we are...

Hello to everyone
Just checking in to see how everyone has been doing. Still :)smoke free :) after 10 months now.
It does seem that everyone is learning how to deall with the weight gain now. I put on about 10-12 lbs since I quit, but it seems like it has leveled off now. Since the fat doesn't want to come off I'm trying to turn it into some muscles instead LOL. I've been riding my bike alot this summer and finally put 200 miles on it yesterday. I'm going to try and ride 100 more before the weather changes here.
I even bought the Wii Fit to start working out indoors. At least now I won't have an excuse during the winter months. This is my 5th day with the wii fit and I'm loving it. I'm using muscles that I haven't used before. It's amazing how that thing works.
Well enough of me now, how is everyone else doing?
Take care,
Casino (AKA) Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl and MaryAnnie and anyone else caring to respond to this thread....it will be a year old soon!! Glad to hear all smoke-free to date. It will be nice to hit the 1 year mark.
I guess I've gained about 15 pounds and not happy about it. Think my metobolism is in the gutter-I do try to lose and then give up when nothing happens. I do exercise but I guess not enough. Keep in touch periodically-good to hear from you. Congrats on the great quit too!!

Hi Beau, Cheryl and Everyone Else,
How great to hear from you again. Yup, the year mark is coming up soon. How cool is that! I'm in the same boat as you as far as the weight gain is concerned. It's very strange because I've gained 15-20 pounds but my pants fit the same. Go figure... Cheryl, why don't you start a thread on the weight loss board so we can keep track of each other? I was walking on the treadmill every day but was building muscle instead of losing so I've slacked off on that. Maybe with fall coming I'll get back at it. It sure is frustrating at times isn't it?
I tell everyone I can about how great it is to be smoke free and how relatively easy it was. Many of the smokers hear all the bad things that happen to others who try to quit so they are too afraid to try it. Personally I think that's just another excuse to continue to smoke. I just feel so much better I wish more people would give it a try. Even after all this time I still suck on the starlight mints and drink water when I get a craving. The mint must help because I always smoked menthol cigs!
Keep in touch everyone. We were visiting relatives this past weekend and told them how this board helped me quit and that they should read it over if they decide to quit too. So, thanks for all the inspiration everyone!!!!!!!
