Hi,
I'm new on this forum (or any others for that matter) and I've got a question that might be stupid but I'm getting a bit anxious about it.
I'm due to have a continual blood pressure monitoring (where you are fitted with something that takes your blood pressure regularly for 24 hours or so as you get on with whatever you have to do) and was wandering how obstructive it is. I am a teacher and would have to go to work wearing it and I'm a bit worried it will show under my clothes and make some noise, etc...I know it's nothing but I'm getting quite worked up with the idea it might be obvious and I'll have loads of weird looks or questions.
Has any of you had that monitoring? Can you tell me how big the machine is? If it makes any noise?

Thanks

Kinou, :)

Welcome! I have have no tips to share as I've never been fitted with one of these ambulatory monitors. Because of the cost, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is not routinely used here.
I have an idea. Since you are a teacher, why not share this with your class? You could give a short lesson about blood pressure. Depending on the age of your students, you could even show them the monitor. Younger kids would find it fascinating. There are photos of this device in a couple of my books. It is not really that big. I don't know how much noise it makes when it self-inflates. I don't think it's as noisy as the ones they use in hospitals.
I hope someone who's worn one will respond to your post with a few helpful tips.

Good luck.:) Please let us know about your experience.

Thanks for your replies,

Flowergirl, I'm a French and Spanish teacher to 11-16 years old so won't be able to make a lesson out of it, but I think you're right if anybody asks I should maybe just explain what it is...

Good luck Jezza, thanks for letting me know how it goes when you're done

Hi Kinou, hope you had a good day at school. Is your school anything like the Waterloo Rd series on BBC1.I had the monitor fitted by the nurse, this morning.Basically its similar to the home monitors. You have to wear the cuff, for 24hrs.The small monitor, is a bit like a walkman, it sits in a belt, when your on the move.Or you can just place it besides you when your sat down.It monitors automatically your blood pressure every 30 minutes, upto 11pm.Then every hour overnight until 7am.I have worn it to work today, bit strange at first, but then ok.No need to get anxious, you will be ok.Please let me know,if you need any more info.Relax and enjoy your free time.Take care.Jezza:)

Thanks, I'm now getting used to the idea of wearing it...just going to use it as an excuse to do some shopping (to find something that will cover it!!!)...Does it make any noise?
And yes my school can be similar to the one in Waterloo Road...in worse sometimes!!! Only joking, it's a rough school but once you get used to it it's not too bad...
Hope everything went ok with your monitoring...I will be very curious to know when my BP is the highest, although I already guess it's at work (usually when I go to the doctor during the holidays my BP is normal!)

Hi Kinou, glad to hear you are not so anxious about the monitoring now.My older brother is an headmaster at a primary school in cornwall. He suffers from high bp aswell, which is quite high during the term time.He says most of his stress comes from the L.E.A, and school budgeting. He is aged under 50,fit,so i think is job doesnt help.I hope your school headmaster doesnt have any skeletons in the cupboard,as like the one on Waterloo rd.I agree with you, your job is very stressful, and would elevate your bp.I try to keep fit,and also practice deep breathing. This seems to help.Do you do any of this.Regards the ,monitor the only noise it makes, is when its taking your bp reading.I went back to the surgery on tuesday, and the nurse fed my readings into the computer, this showed up like a graph. My readings were fine, apart from my time spent at work.I hope you enjoy your shopping trip. All the best.Jezza:)

Hi,
Just to let you know I had the BP monitoring and...have survived!!! It wasn't as bad as I thought, I just let my students talk more than usual to hide the noise!!!...the only thing I didn't expect was the pain, it wasn't that bad but basically I didn't expect any pain so I got a shock everytime the band inflated (I now have nice bruises!!!)...
