Rythmol has only been on the market for about 5 years. Personally, the drug didn't work for me because I kept having arrythmias daily until I had my second cardiac ablation. There are some side effects. The most common side effects affect the digestive, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. The most serious are heartbeat abnormalities.

More common side effects may include:
Constipation, dizziness, heartbeat abnormalities, nausea, unusual taste in the mouth, vomiting

Other side effects may include:
Abdominal pain or cramps, anemia, angina (chest pain), anxiety, blood disorders, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, bruising, cardiac arrest, coma, confusion, congestive heart failure, depression, diarrhea, dreaming abnormalities, drowsiness, dry mouth, eye irritation, fainting or near fainting, fatigue, fever, flushing, gas, hair loss, headache, heart palpitations, heartbeat abnormalities (rapid, irregular, slow), hot flashes, impotence, increased blood sugar, indigestion, inflamed esophagus, stomach, or intestines, insomnia, itching, joint pain, kidney disease, kidney failure, lack of coordination, liver dysfunction, loss of appetite, loss of balance, low blood pressure, memory loss, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, numbness, pain, psychosis, rash, red or purple spots on the skin, ringing in the ears, seizures, speech abnormalities, sweating, swelling due to fluid retention, tingling or pins and needles, tremor, unusual smell sensations, vertigo, vision abnormalities, weakness

i have been on rhythmol for 9mos now. i am post ablation for atrial fib/flutter. after 6mos my cardiologist said my heart is in sinus rhythm now. it tool 6mos and a 30 day monitor because i was and am having exercise intolerance. too much (shopping and on my feet for a long time) will make me weak to a point of having to sit down and recover only to have it again if i continue. i feel close to fainting as i did once after ablation in our yard. my dr. has taken be off coumadin, cardizem, and has reduced my rhythmol. it's still happening occasionally. that reduction was on 12/17, wonder if those drugs are still in my system. i am still on toprol xl (100) and he added 325 aspirin a day.
