Hi All:
As I mentioned in my "constipation" thread, my PM decided 3 months ago to change my Oxycontin from 2x to 3x/day. I know it has made a huge difference for me, especially my mornings. And it has enabled me to cut back on my BT meds, too.
Even though the literature says 12 hours, I really think, at least in my case, it never lasted more than about 8. Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.
Thanks and God Bless, cmpgirl

When I was on OC, I was bumped to 3x day. It really helped. Many report that it just doesn't last 12 hours. My pharmacist confirms this and says that most say the same thing. I agree with him when he says that if that many people all say the same thing, there must be something to it. You're lucky you have a compassionate Doc who really cares....Many Docs won't script OC, much less 3x day.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Good Morning all:
I really am lucky to have the PM doc that I have. He always makes me feel like he really cares, and my past PM always acted like I was just a bother to him. I've heard he treats all his patients like that.
My current PM talked about upping me to 3x/day about a year ago, but I was concerned that, being in my mid forties and this whole pain thing not ever going away, I would max myself out, so to speak, and have nowhere left to go down the road. When he brought it up again this year I told him that and he said I didn't need to be worried, because 20mg of Oxycontin, 3x/day was not as much as I thought it was. So this time I agreed. And I have to say I'm really glad I did.
Thanks for the replies and I hope everyone is having the best day their pain allows. cmpgirl:)

Hey there cmpgirl:
I just wanted to chime in and say that with the LA opiod/opiate medications, at least most of them can be upped indefinitely. The big "max" factor is the doctor or insurance company have a max in their head and won't go over it. Or the insurance company has a max amount of certain medications that they are willing to pay for. But, with the Oxycontin, theoretically you could go up indefinitely since it does not have acetaminophen in it like Percocet does. Oh, another thing that does limit things is when the side effects start to really take their toll on things especially the drowsiness, sedative factor although Oxycontin tends to have an "energizing" factor. There are many, many articles that say this in case you wanted to research it. Your doctor might say 400mg of Oxycontin/day is his limit and he would switch you to something else if you reached this dose. There is some need to worry about "maxing" things out but there usually are options especially with the opiod/opidate medications. The biggest thing to take care of is keeping your pain level at an appropriate one. So whatever it takes to keep you at a 5 or below then that's what it takes. Do you understand what I am trying to say? Hope that made sense. I used to constantly worry about the same thing but I am on the 50mcg fentanyl patch, 4 Lortabs/day, 2 Ultram/day and I am only 33 YEARS OLD.<---------;)

Hey Brian: Thanks for the info. As for right now, the 20mg. 3x/day along with my BT meds is doing the trick for me. I would say my average pain level day to day now is between 5-6. Of course I do have days when my pain spikes, but that is usually because I have done a little too much the day before etc. I'm very careful about picking and choosing the "extra" things I do, like go out to do the bi-monthly shopping with hubby, for instance. We are super budget concious and do the whole coupon thing and go to different grocery stores to get the best prices. Those days always take a toll and cause a spike in my pain for a day or two after. I've gotten used to that now and "mentally" prepare myself for the increase in pain. Then I lay real low for a couple of days after. I'm lucky to have that luxury, cause my daughter is grown up and I can't work anymore.
I had just noticed that there seem to be a lot of people here on the board only taking two LA meds, or none at all, so I was curious. I really believe that even though the pharm companies say 12 hours, it's really only about 8 and as you probably saw in other posts here, some here that take LA meds seem to agree. I'm glad it's not just me that felt that way.
What I was really relieved about was that my PM didn't feel I was in danger of maxing myself out at too young an age. That really scared me. God Bless and thanks for the replies everyone! cmpgirl:)

sorry, I thought you meant, "does anyone here take three LA meds a day," meaning three DIFFERENT LA meds. My bad. Glad you are getting relief!
