That is what I am taking and I really feel that I need to up the dose. I took one 20mg 6 am and by noon I was still in pain. I am alowed 3 aday. I went ahead and took my last 2 at one pm. It really worked well and took my pain away without side effects. So my question would be, do I ask my doctor if he will up meds to 40mg 3x day or ask for break thru meds or what. I am new to this. The weird thing is, was that yesterday I only needed 2 pills all day. so ...... I see my doc this thursday. What is my next step?
Thanks,
georgi
ps I have pain all the time, but sometimes it is worse than other times.

georgi:
The main thing that you need to communicate with your doctor is that your pain meds are not controlling the pain well enough. Actually this is probably something you should recite. I would say something like:

"My pain meds are not controlling my pain well enough. My pain level is averaging around a ? and I am having a difficult time coping with that much pain. What can we do to be able to get my pain level down to a more reasonable level."

Then wait for him to respond and see what he suggests. Let him think that he is the one doing the thinking and figuring out the appropriate levels of narcotic medication. Depending on what he says you might have to ask:

"Would there be anyway that would could increase my Oxycontin a little higher?

Also you really should be on a BT med for when you do have those flare ups. The most logical BT med with Oxycontin would be Percocet (oxcodone APAP). However, he may be one of those docs that does not believe in BT meds. You will just have to feel him out.

Do not go in and say: "I want you to increase my Oxycontin to 40mg 3x/day because I took 2 doses at once and it worked well.

For one it would show the doc that you are not following his directions and also that you might be a drug seeker or abuser. So follow my advice and others that may suggest other things to say. Hope that helps.
