I was wondering if anyone knew why I am having discoloration at the free edge of some of my nails. It's like there is a very small clear band and then a whitish with a yellowy tinge part and then thevery edge is almost clear again. On some nails the edge is whitish with clear spots in them. the nail bed appears perfectly fine and pink. Perfect smile line on all of them just this deal with the tips. What could be going on?

Some people are very luck in that their free edge is fairly white; others have more of a 'clear' free edge. Right where the nail starts to be free edge is a greyish or yellowish band (at the smile line) that is usually a different color. This is normal. You might try using a cutilce remover product under the free edge. If there is a lot of translucent skin on the underside of the nail plate, it would account for some of the discoloration. Translucent skin under the nail cannot be seen, it can only be 'seen' after it has been softened with a cuticle remover and then scraped from under the nail plate. After you have cleaned this skin away, you can soak your nails in 5-minute Polident Denture cleaner to get them whiter.
