I am on Ultram and Vicodin for my back pain. I've been taking the Vicodin since last Thursday and it doesn't seem to be working. I called my doctor yesterday to let him know that it isn't working well and don't want to take more than what is prescribed. He has yet to call back. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Should I call him back again today or just deal with it?

HI,
I would call the Dr. back and not stop until you get some help. Never change your meds without your DR. knowing and advising the proper dosage. I have a high tolerance to vicodin ( up to 2 extra strength at a time) But the amount of the tylenol in it is big time bad for your liver, I never knew that until my dr. told me that. So any increases should always be by the doc since we don't always know what the pills really contain that can hurt us.
Good Luck
God Bless

I did call my doctor back today and I talked to his nurse. She said that she would talk to him, but wouldn't be able to until tomorow. She did ask me some questions about my pain, like rate it from 1-10 and I told her it was about 7. I told her that I didn't want to take more than what I'm supposed to and she said that it was good that I did call. So, I guess I will just have to take what I need to today and then wait for them to call back tomorrow. If they don't call by noon tomorrow then I will call them.

Shanon,
I would wait until that nurse & the office was closed and call the answering service and request your Dr. to call you back tonight! How dare she think it is ok to leave you in such pain over night. If it's not your dr. that will call you back it will be one that can dictate some idea of what you can at least increase what you have to until your dr. can talk to you tomorrow. I'm sorry but I really hate when these healthy people think it's ok to suffer. I have learned from years of suffering that there is no reason that you shuold beleft in pain to that degree over night, especially since you have tried to let the drugs work for days already with no help. You employ that dr. he doesn't employ you. Actaully I will give the dr. a break since it was his nurse that told you that, does she have a medical license, how does she get off trying to tell you to wait another day. I'm sorry for going on like this but that just gets under my skin big time.
I would try the answering service and tak to a real dr. not that dingy nurse.
I do hope you get help tonight.
God Bless
Carol

mamakitkat,
I will do that. I just don't want my doctor to think I'm being desperate. In a way, I am desperate, desperate not to be in pain. As I sit here on the couch typing this, my lower back and legs just ache to no end. My hubby won't be home until after 7(late night) and I have to churn up enough energy to fix dinner for my kids and help with homework. I just feel like these doctors think we, as pain sufferers, are just full of crap and do what they want to do. It's not fair!!!!

Yes definitely don't suffer. I have done that many times and am just finally learning to speak up for myself and tell them that I'M HURTING and finally someone is listening to me. Please don't let yourself suffer and if you have to scream, SCREAM to get someone to listen to you.
And also when you are hurting try to take it easy and listen to your pain. Tonight, I called hubby and asked him to bring McDonalds home for dinner because I am hurting to much and you know what my kiddos were perfectly happy with that. They ate a small snack to hold them off, let me take an hour nap because they knew I was feeling poorly, and when dinner came late tonight they did not complain. Afterall what is better then FRIES?

Yes it is good to tell the doctor/nurse that you are suffering in pain. However, as you might have seen here on these boards there have been many people let go from their doctor for "calling too often" of "bugging" the doctor and then you would really be up...well you know. You are just going to have to wait.
I saw that you are in Ohio and I am too. I check the weather on the weather channel's website often and you can look at the aches & pains forecast day to day. The pain forcast for Ohio today is VERY HIGH. I am hurting worse than normall too and it does have ALOT to do with the weather. You will probably notice this. Just to warn you Saturday is supposed to be a 10 (the highest) on the pain forecast and I am being prepared but trying not to freak out since I have been in PM for so long that I know big storms and strong cold fronts equal MUCH GREATER PAIN.
Here are a couple of things that you might do.
1. Try taking Ibuprofen or Aleve along with your regular meds which might have an effect.
2. Increase the Tylenol as long as you don't go over 4000mg for the day. The increased acetaminophen will give your pain meds a "boost".
3. Also caffeine helps to give the pain meds a boost although you might not want to do it this late.
4. Try taking a warm/hot bath or shower.
5. Put a heating pad on your back.
6.Ask your husband to give you a massage.
And the biggest thing is not to overdue things and also realize that a majority of the increased pain could definitely be due to the weather. Take care.

Before calling the answering service after hours, I would HIGHLY recommend that you understand that many PM doctors have specific rules about medication issues being handled after hours/during the weekend. Most regular doctors won't do anything about increasing or calling meds in during after hours & weekends either for that matter.
No, I don't think it's right to have to suffer, BUT it might be better to try using ice/heat compresses, hot baths and other things (Like Brian suggested) to hold you until they call tomorrow. Waiting and calling after hours may put you in a bad light with the doctor which can cause a whole new set of problems.
Are you taking the Ultram as well, or just the Vicodin? If you are only taking the Vicodin and he prescribed both Ultram & Vicodin together, then please use them both.
Again, I'm not saying that it's right to have to suffer, but you do have at least a little bit of releif until tomorrow, no? That's better than nothing. I just don't want you to anything that might cause problems for yourself. The nurse said she would call you tomorrow, so give her the benefit of the doubt until then.
Best wishes.

Hi Shannon.I just wanted to tell you that there's a clinic in my town where the doctors wont return calls like that nor can the pharmacy call them or fax them.Maybe they just want your money because the only way to talk with them is by being there. It's crappy because they only take walk ins on certain days and the rest by appt. I finally found a wonderful doctor and was able to tell them good riddens.Sounds like you may have to make another appt or walk in if you can do that without waiting hours. If you're in pain and you can't get in quik enough go to the emergency room.Nobody should be treated like that.Good luck!;)I am on Ultram and Vicodin for my back pain.

I wouldn't call after hours (yet anyway), but I would first thing in the morning when the office opens. I'd call and ask to speak to the same nurse again....And I would really STRESS how much pain you're in and ask if either you can come in immediately, or if they give you something else. Since going to the next level in pain meds would be something in the Oxycodone family, you'll need a written script (because it's a CII). Maybe he'll let your husband swing by and pick it up.
If you can't reach the nurse, leave a message and then call about every two hours until you reach her. When you finally reach her, apologize for calling but that you are in tremendous pain. I suggest you keep calling even after leaving a message because some offices don't check their messages but once a day....And then, it's usually late in the day. To be perfectly honest, Doc offices these days are horrendously busy...and patients move through their like cattle....Nothing against you, but patients fall off the radar screen if they don't keep calling. Out of sight, out of mind.
I understand what one poster said about repeated calls and PM clinics, but in your case, it's fine. Those rules are for patients who are stablized and repeated calls often turn out be drug seekers. Conversely, you were just put on meds very recently, and you have every reason to call.
Good luck, and hope this helps. God Bless!
