It all depends. Each surgery is different and every Dr. has different ideas of how to do things. My stitches came out at 10 days but he kept me bandaged for 17 days so showering involved bagging my foot(found that taping on one bag and then another bag over that worked pretty good) and I am going to be off the foot for at least 6 weeks and maybe longer. Hard to say how long recovery is going to be everyone recovers different and has different tolerances for pain and discomfort and that will affect your recovery.

Part of this depends on whether your pin is permanent or temporary.
Will you be weight bearing right away or some weeks down the road?
You should prepare yourself for nothing strenuous on your feet for at least 6 weeks, probably more.
If you are comfortable with getting around your gym on crutches though you can be doing upper body and ab work within a week to 10 days. That helped me stay sane. Be careful that you don't stress the foot too much, you don't want to have to do this more than once!

At least 6 weeks. Ask your doctor lots of questions.
Start taking calcium supplements.
Get a lot of books, movies or magazines and be ready to lounge.
There is a blog several months back that gives a lot of questions to ask.
Ask him what the worst thing that can happen and best outcome. What is his percentage of failures?
Are you having a bone graft?
This site has a lot of bad experiences but also has alot of good ones.

Get a cast cover for the shower. It's like a rubber stretch boot that works great! I had one and I've loaned it to friends since. You can get one at drugstores but my doc gave me one the day of surgery.
