I have not been on this site for a long time. Two years ago, I suffered from sever reflux that lasted for about 9 months. I never totally got rid of it but it was better until now. Two years ago I have two scopes, cat scans, upper Gi. They did not find anything but small polps whic they said was nothing to worry about. Anyway I was on nexium and stayed on it up to now.
A month ago the first day of my cruise, I got a sore throat, cough and burning. It lasted all throught the cruise and continues now. Ya wait for 8 monts for a vacation and spend it eating mashed potatos. Anyway went to my PCP who said that I should take 2 40mg of nexium together for two weeks and then go back to the one. He felt that thats should help. I am suffering so much pains in my back burning in my stomach, sore throat and cough. You all know what I mean. I am afraid to take two nexiums together. I did take two one in the morning and one at night today. Maybe I will take two tomorrow but I am afraid that it will be too much. I really wish I could get off this. I elevated my bed with a wedge.
In two weeks I have an appointment with my GI doctor. I hope that I do not have to get scoped again. I also have IBS and a lot of anxiety. I know anxiety plays a huge part of all of this.
What do you all think of taking two nexiums together? there is so mucn info here and knowledge, I would really like your opinions.
thank you

This is done all the time by many reflux sufferers, especially those having laryngoesophageal reflux (LPR). They are (including me) routinely prescribed 2 Nexium/day. And for very, very long times.
Often there is a debate (obviously between doctors) about which is better - together, or at 2 different times in the day.
Many people were prescribed 2 in the morning, and think it is great. I myself was prescribed separate times, but if they told me 2 at a time I wouldn't shrink. PPIs are very inoccuous and really don't do much to you. Probably about the least offensive drug you could take.
I just personally (after reading lots) think 2 spread over the day is better because every pill works for about 16 hrs (so the co. tells us), not 18 or more (a normal waking day). I'd rather full power of each over as long time as possible.

Thanks for your opinion. I agree I like to spread it out some. I have been doing that for a couple of days. I take one before lunch and then super. It has helped very little. I probaly should do that for a while and then if that does not help try the double dose at one time.
As everyone here knows it really gets very frustrating. I know that stress fuels it more and once it becomes intense, it takes a long time for it to get under control. For me even when it is a little under control, I still feel it.
So how long do you think or anyone here thinks I should continue taking 40mg seprately and then try to take the 80mg at once if I don't feel much better?

Okay, I have a few questions about symptoms of LPR, and please forgive me if these have been addressed previously, I didn't see them, but I just need to know if anyone else is having these same problems. I was diagnosed with LPR almost a year ago, the Dr. used the scope through the nose to diagnose it. I have been on Protonix since then but did not take it regularly and didn't seem to really have a problem. I had an episode with it in October which lasted about 10 days from beginning to end, until my throat felt compeletely normal. Now I have had it since Feb. 12 with a few good days, but what really scared me is this: On Friday my left ear started hurting and feeling full inside, then the left side of my throat started feeling swollen and burning, I took some Astelin nose spray (also prescribed by ENT) and just ignored it, it started feeling better, then Friday evening I took my protonix ate dinner and then I had some Whopper candies, the next thing I knew I felt like I had sandpaper in the upper back portion of my throat and it hurt to swallow, then I had a reflux that came up to my mouth, then started coughing uncontrollably. I drank some water, went to bed and when I woke up Saturday I felt like my whole left side of my throat from ear down past whatever opens and closes when you swallow felt swollen and dry and felt like it was kind of sticking when I did swallow. In essence it felt like I could only swallow on the right side. Well this freaked me out and since I suffer from Anxiety I took a Xanax and went back to bed for another 3 hours, it still felt the same when I got up, but after about an hour and 1/2 it felt better. Now today feels fine, but vocal chords feel a little burn, like my voice might break up. Anyway when something like this happens I just really think I must have something else wrong with me. Just wondering if anyone else has this same symptom.
Thanks for all your input, this board is a Godsend.
Also what do you think of Protonix vs. Nexium, I am thinking of asking my Dr. to switch me since I have been on Protonix 2x day for 2wks.

I've been on Nexium for YEARS and have had no problems. Then our insurance changed (we do our precrips via mail) and when my prescription went in for Nexium, BECAUSE my doc didn't write BRAND ONLY the insurance company took it upon themselves to change me to PROTONIX. Well, it's Memorial weekend, I've been on the the protonix for 5 days and my acid reflux/heartburn is getting worse. Cant even enjoy the great food. So, i came across a Nexium capsule I had in my travel bag and called my local pharmacist. He said, "Take it, if you are getting acid reflux that bad, you have a lot of acid" So I took it about 20 mins ago and guess what???? It's already working!!! The cook out has been saved!!! I can enjoy eating again!! Stick with Nexium. I've been on Zantac years ago and Prilosec and they didn't work either. Nexium is the BEST!!
